In 2020, British-American actress Anya Taylor-Joy made a lasting impression with the Netflix series The Queen’s Gambit. Against the backdrop of mid-20th century chess competitions, the show revealed the talent and magnetic charm of the actress to a larger audience.

That production propelled her career and opened the doors to many prestigious projects. One can think of the comical film adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel Emma (2020) by Universal Studios to the blockbuster Dune 2 (2024), starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, or Furiosa (2024), the latest chapter in the Mad Max saga.

Anya Taylor-Joy, star of the show Lucky

But she hasn’t turned her back on streaming platforms… The Hollywood star appears in The Gorge, a sci-fi film produced by Apple TV+ starring Sigourney Weaver and Miles Teller, available on the platform since February 14th, 2025. The pitch for this action-romance feature? “Two very dangerous young people who, despite the corrupt and deadly world they live in, find their soulmate.

Today, the Queen’s Gambit actress is reuniting with Apple TV+ for a new project. She is taking on the lead in a miniseries entitled Lucky. Anya Taylor-Joy portrays Lucky Armstrong, a young woman who has mastered the art of con. After a string of scams, cheats, and swindles, she is left penniless by her boyfriend and partner in crime, played by rising star Drew Starkey. Forced to face elements of her past, she has to find a way to outsmart the authorities…

The series is based on a novel written by Marissa Stapley and published in 2021. An instant bestseller, the book received a warm welcome from Reese Witherspoon, who recommended it to her fans through her book club. The enthusiasm was such that the Legally Blonde star is now going to be one of the show’s executive producers, alongside Anya Taylor-Joy and showrunner Jonathan Trooper (Banshee, See). This seven-episode drama will premiere on July 15th, 2026. The trailer promises a taut thriller, starring Annette Bening (American Beauty) and Timothy Olyphant (Hitman).

Anya Taylor-Joy’s big comeback in a Netflix show

Anya Taylor-Joy will also appear in the cast of a major Netflix project… The thriller How to Kill Your Family, adapted from Bella Mackie’s 2021 crime novel. Just like The Queen’s Gambit, the project will take the form of a miniseries. The actress is expected to step into the role of Grace Bernard, an acerbic, and above all, morbid character.

Driven by a desire for revenge against her paternal extended family, who have denied her existence since birth. The protagonist designs a tragic plan with a single purpose – killing all those who rejected her and securing a hefty inheritance.

A film directed by Romain Gavras

A criminal role that the actress will also take on in French director Romain Gavras’s upcoming project, Sacrifice. Co-written by British screenwriter Will Arbery and shot in Greece, the film features Anya Taylor-Joy in a story of kidnapping.

The star is leading a group of armed radicals storming an upscale charity gala, alongside Chris Evans, Salma Hayek, Charli xcx, Yung Lean, and Vincent Cassel. Her character is seen as a loose reinterpretation of Joan of Arc, a powerful historical figure and one that should once again put the actress in the spotlight.

The star soon to portray Joni Mitchell?

But the American-British actress also seems to be eyeing a very different kind of role. After singing and dancing in the psychological thriller Last Night in Soho (2022), Anya Taylor-Joy could portray the young Joni Mitchell in an upcoming biopic, alongside Meryl Streep.

In an even lighter, more magical register, she may soon sparkle in the Disney universe. In a September interview with Vogue Hong Kong – for which she appeared on the cover – Anya Taylor-Joy revealed she would love to play Princess Elsa in a Disney live-action remake of Frozen recently announced. A musical, magical characters, fantastical tale… A surprising choice that adds yet another eclectic chapter to the actress’s ever-growing list of projects.
