Which zany Tim Burton project is Margot Robbie producing?

Following the release of the hit film Barbie, actress and producer Margot Robbie is now working on a film adaptation of the fictional world of the video game The Sims. She is also at the helm of an eccentric sci-fi project directed by none other than Tim Burton. Here’s an overview of her upcoming projects…

  • Tim Burton’s wacky project to be produced by Margot Robbie

Margot Robbie made a lasting impression as a life-size Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster of the same name. But the acclaimed actress could soon be taking on another giant role. Indeed, she might star in the remake of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman (1958). This camp, sci-fi film was originally directed by Nathan Juran.

Launched by Warner Bros., the project is set to be directed by the master of gothic cinema, Tim Burton, with Margot Robbie on board as producer. The original film tells the wild story of Nancy, a wealthy heiress who, after an encounter with aliens, grows to fifty feet tall. She then wreaks havoc on her town, taking her revenge on those who wronged her, especially her husband. With its juicy revenge plot, the film could take on a feminist tone in Margot Robbie’s hands.

The production has brought in screenwriters Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, known for their work on Netflix’s animated hit KPop Demon Hunters. They will be handling the script after the departure of screenwriter Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl).

Margot Robbie is taking on the universe of The Sims

But that’s not the only surprising project the actress is tackling. Margot Robbie seems to have a real passion for the games that defined our childhoods. After portraying the iconic Barbie doll on the big screen, the Australian actress will now produce a film based on the cult video game series The Sims. The Hollywood Reporter first shared the news in March 2024, and confirmed it in September of the same year.

Laura Miele, president of EA Entertainment, officially announced the upcoming Sims adaptation in an interview with Variety. “It’s a testament to the enduring power of this beloved franchise, which has captivated more than 500 million players for a quarter of a century,” she declared. The film follows in the footsteps of other video game titles adapted for the silver screen, such as Super Mario Bros. (2023), the Sonic trilogy, and A Minecraft Movie.

    A powerful producer

But one question remains unanswered. Will Margot Robbie herself play one of the quirky citizens from Sim City? Given how effortlessly she slipped into the role of the iconic Mattel doll in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023), the actress with a thousand faces could once again make headlines by stepping into the shoes of a Sim.

For the record, The Sims universe was developed in the early 2000s by American studio Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. Today, the franchise boasts over 200 million fans worldwide, including 85 million from The Sims 4, the latest installment.

Across the different versions of the game, users can take charge of the life of their Sims, inhabitants of Sim City, and direct their actions. By creating fictional societies, players watch their characters evolve in complex worlds, building homes and founding families.

Wuthering Heights, Monopoly… The actress’s multiple projects

The Sims will be directed by Kate Herron, who worked on the first season of the Marvel series Loki (2021). Margot Robbie will produce the film through her company LuckyChap Entertainment, which she has been running with her husband Tom Ackerley, Josey McNamara, and Sophia Kerr since 2014. The screenplay will be co-written by Briony Redman (Doctor Who).

Among the standout projects backed by the California-based company – whose aim is to bring powerful female-driven stories to the screen – are the hit films Saltburn (2023), I, Tonya (2018), and the feminist blockbuster Barbie (2023). In addition to that, a film centered around the board game Monopoly is coming up too. Regarding her acting career, Margot Robbie will soon appear alongside Jacob Elordi in Wuthering Heights (2026) by Emerald Fennell. She will also star in Avengelyne and in a prequel to Ocean’s Eleven.

Attack of the 50 Foot Woman by Tim Burton and The Sims by Kate Herron have no release date yet.
Wuthering Heights by Emerald Fennell will come out in theaters on February 11th, 2026.
