In recent years, Luca Guadagnino has made a name for himself as a particularly prolific filmmaker directing a series of films starring impressive actors. After working with Timothée Chalamet in Bones and All (2022) and Zendaya in Challengers (2024), he continues to raise the bar.

After the Hunt, Luca Guadagnino’s new film starring Julia Roberts

In 2025, Italian director Luca Guadagnino unveiled After the Hunt on Amazon Prime Video, for which he brought together a trio of leading actresses. The film will star Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, 2022), and Chloë Sevigny. The highly-anticipated feature premiered at the Venice Film Festival in August 2025.

This thriller revolves around a university professor (Julia Roberts), who has to face the consequences of an accusation made by one of her students against one of her colleagues.

Another part of the plot will address a dark secret from her own past that threatens to come to light. The feature is worth watching for its stellar cast, yet it struggled to win over critics. American actor Michael Stuhlbarg, who previously appeared in Call Me by Your Name (2017), and Andrew Garfield (Spider-Man: No Way Home, 2021) are both reuniting with the director.

Luca Guadagnino will adapt American Psycho

Again, Deadline has revealed that the Italian director is currently working on an adaptation of American Psycho, the cult novel written by Bret Easton Ellis in 1991. The first film adaptation was directed by Mary Harron in 2000 and featured a physically intense performance by Christian Bale at the peak of his art. Yet, it sparked controversy at time because of its extreme violence and biting satire of the 1980s consumer society.

Produced by the American studios Lionsgate, the new feature directed by Luca Guadagnino will not be a remake of the 2000 film, but rather a whole new cinematic production.

    Margot Robbie as Patrick Bateman?

One crucial question, however, remained unanswered. Who will succeed Christian Bale in the role of Patrick Bateman, the racist, misogynistic sociopath with a thirst for gruesome murders? Many have mentioned the brilliant Austin Butler.

Before his name came up, Variety had listed other potential actors in an article published in October 2024. Jacob Elordi, Charles Melton, Harris Dickinson, Aubrey Plaza, Lucien Laviscount, and Timothée Chalamet – who has already starred in two of Luca Guadagnino’s films (Call Me by Your Name, Bones and All) – were said to be on the shortlist. Except that another piece of news has come up… Actress Margot Robbie may be cast as a female version of the character.

Artificial, a biopic about the creator of OpenAI

Sometimes, art reflects the anxieties of its time. With his new project, Luca Guadagnino seems to do just that. At a moment when artificial intelligence is often viewed as the greatest threat to authentic artistic creation, the Italian filmmaker is preparing a biopic focusing on the man behind today’s most widely used AI software.

Artificial tells the story of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI and the driving force behind the ubiquitous ChatGPT. According to the media Deadline, the biographical film will “evolve around the period at the artificial intelligence company OpenAi in 2023 that saw CEO Sam Altman fired and rehired in a matter of days.”

Cooper Koch and Andrew Garfield as co-stars

Fifteen years after starring in The Social Network, a film about Facebook, Andrew Garfield returns to the world of tech moguls, playing the lead role in this new project. Monica Barbaro and Yura Borisov will be joining him – both of them received an Oscar nomination in 2025 for their performances in A Complete Unknown and Anora, respectively.

According to the latest information reported by Deadline, American actor Cooper Koch – seen in the series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and the feature film Swallowed – may be joining the cast of Artificial. For now, no further information has been provided regarding the nature of his role… We also know that Damon Albarn will create the soundtrack.

    Separate rooms… Another thrilling project

Among his many other endeavors, the prolific Italian director behind Queer, a film starring the remarkable Daniel Craig and adapted from the 1985 novel of the same name written by William Burroughs. Finally, Luca Guadagnino might also be preparing an adaptation of the novel Separate Rooms (1989) by Pier Vittorio Tondelli, which follows the life of an Italian writer, starring Léa Seydoux and Josh O’Connor.
