Erotic thriller, iconic director… Charli xcx is the new hope of indie cinema
Singer Charli xcx will star in cult filmmaker Gregg Araki’s upcoming film I Want Your Sex alongside Olivia Wilde. Other new exciting projects? A feminist reading of One Thousand and One Nights and a drama set in Poland, which respectively premiered at the 2025 Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival. What if those three features propelled the once niche singer to the ranks of a Hollywood actress to watch closely?

I Want Your Sex, Gregg Araki’s new film
Who said the “Brat Summer” was over? After making her mark over the last three months with the album Brat, its videos and its gleaming remixes, Charli xcx will soon be making the headlines of the cinema news.
Indeed, the singer will be in the cast of the highly anticipated I Want Your Sex by cult independent filmmaker Gregg Araki (The Doom Generation, Mysterious Skin, Nowhere).
Known for his trashy, violent, countercultural and sexy aesthetic, the American director has a knack for bringing together magnetic stars on screen: Rose McGowan, Chiara Mastroianni, Eva Green, Shannen Doherty, Roxane Mesquida, Juno Temple and Traci Lords have already starred in his films.
For I Want Your Sex, Gregg Araki also hits hard by calling on (in addition to Charli xcx) actress and director Olivia Wilde (Don’t Worry Darling, Too Much) and Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza), who is none other than Philip Seymour Hoffman‘s son…
If Gregg Araki has worked in recent years on series (American Gigolo, Now Apocalypse, 13 Reasons Why, Riverdale, American Crime…), he had not made a feature film since the sublime and disturbing White Bird, released in 2014.

His return to the big screen is therefore particularly scrutinized… Especially since the subject is proving to be very exciting… Presented as a thriller (which we imagine to be erotic) and co-written with columnist Karley Sciortino, the film should be shot in a few weeks, in Los Angeles.

According to Variety, the film asks the question : “How far can we go?” The pitch? “When Elliot (Cooper Hoffman) lands an exciting job for artist, icon, and provocateur Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde), her fantasies come true when she asks him to become her sex muse. But Elliot soon finds himself overwhelmed as Erika takes him on a journey deeper than he could have ever imagined, into a world of sex, obsession, power, betrayal, and murder. “

Mais ce projet ambitieux n’est pas le seul de Charli xcx, qui avait déjà prêté sa voix au dessin animé UglyDolls (2019) et signé des morceaux pour la BO d’Angry Birds (2016), Bottoms (2023) et le blockbuster Barbie (2023) de Greta Gerwig. La star composera à nouveau des chansons originales pour l’adaptation des Hauts de Hurlevent par Emerald Fennell.
Cette année, on retrouvait l’artiste dans un épisode de la truculente série Overcompensating. En plus d’être l’une des productrices exécutives du projet, Charli xcx a fait une apparition éclair dans l’un des épisodes de la série dans lequel elle joue son propre rôle.

Charli xcx jouera aussi aux côtés de Nicolas Galitzine, Emma Corrin et Maika Monroe (Longlegs) dans une version féministe des Mille et une nuits : une adaptation du roman 100 Nights of Hero d’Isabel Greenberg. Présentée dans la section de Semaine internationale de la critique de la Mostra de Venise 2025 ce 5 septembre, cette relecture signe le premier long-métrage de la réalisatrice Julia Jackman.
Enfin, Charli xcx figure au casting du film Sacrifice de Romain Gavras avec Anya Taylor-Joy et Salma Hayek. Le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est que dans le cinéma, comme dans la musique, la chanteuse sait s’entourer…

And that’s not all! Charli xcx has also launched her own production company, Studio365. Alongside A24, she will co-produce the film The Moment, directed by Aidan Zamiri, the man behind the video for her track 360. The trend-setter behind the Brat Summer will have the lead role in this feature film based on one of her idea – a pop star preparing for a tour. Her longtime collaborator A. G. Cook will also be part of the project, overseeing the original soundtrack.
The stars making an appearance in this mockumentary are dizzying. Kylie Jenner, Rosanna Arquette, Alexander Skarsgård, Rachel Sennott, Mel Ottenberg, Shygirl, and even Arielle Dombasle will be part of the cast.
Enfin, Charli xcx poursuit son ascension dans le registre horrifique avec un nouveau projet. En effet, elle produira et incarnera le rôle principal du prochain film du réalisateur japonais Takashi Miike. Réputé pour ses scènes d’une extrême violence, ce cinéaste prolifique sera épaulé par Ross Evans, scénariste du projet. Aucune information ne circule au sujet de l’intrigue de ce long-métrage…
