Chloë Sevigny: which French project will feature the actress?
L’adaptation au cinéma du livre Bonjour Tristesse de Françoise Sagan se dévoile de jour en jour. Cette semaine, une première image de ce projet excitant, réalisé par la Montréalaise Durga Chew-Bose, montre l’excellente actrice Chloë Sevigny au volant d’une voiture. Voici ce qu’il faut savoir de ce film très attendu.

The new film adaptation of Bonjour Tristesse
70 years after its publication, Bonjour Tristesse is still deserving of its place among the great classics of French literature. Published in 1954, the excellent first book secretly written by Françoise Sagan, who was 18 years old at the time, is once again the topic of a film adaptation – a first adaptation of the novel starring Jean Seberg was released in 1958.
With this major project, Montreal-born Indian author Durga Chew-Bose makes her debut in the world of the seventh art as both film director and screenwriter. Produced in collaboration with Françoise Sagan’s son Denis Westhoff as the executive producer, Bonjour Tristesse has no release date yet, but a first image has been unveiled. It shows three characters in a convertible car bathed in Mediterranean sunshine.
According to Variety, the film should follow the same narrative arc as the one developed in the cult book written by the infamous author who won the prestigious French literary award “Prix des Critiques” in 1954. The story focuses on the character of Cécile, who, after failing her high school diploma, goes to the Côte d’Azur with her father Raymond and her young companion Elsa for the summer holidays. While the three are enjoying the sun and gentle pace of life in the South of France, Anne, an old family friend, enters their lives. Her strict, sanctimonious behavior turns their everyday lives upside down, so much so that Cécile works up a plan to get her away that will eventually have tragic consequences.

70 ans après sa sortie, l’ouvrage Bonjour Tristesse mérite encore sa place auprès des classiques incontournables de la littérature française. Publié en 1954, l’excellent premier livre rédigé en cachette par Françoise Sagan, alors âgée de 18 ans, fait une nouvelle fois l’objet d’une adaptation au cinéma (une première adaptation mettant en scène Jean Seberg est sortie dans les salles obscures en 1958).
Avec ce projet d’envergure, l’auteure d’origine indienne basée à Montréal, Durga Chew-Bose fait ses premiers pas dans le monde du septième art en tant que réalisatrice et scénariste.
Si le film produit avec Denis Westhoff, le fils de Françoise Sagan (producteur exécutif) n’a pas encore de date de sortie, une première image de Bonjour Tristesse a cependant été dévoilée. On y voit, trois personnages dans une voiture décapotable baignée dans le soleil méditerranéen.
Selon Variety, le film devrait rester fidèle au livre culte de la célèbre écrivaine récompensée du prix des Critiques en 1954. L’histoire suit Cécile, qui passe l’été sur la côte d’Azur, avec son père Raymond et sa jeune compagne Elsa, après avoir raté son baccalauréat. Alors que les trois personnages profitent du soleil de la douceur de vivre du sud de la France, Anne, une vieille amie de la famille entre dans leur vie. Son mode de vie stricte et moralisateur chamboule leur quotidien si bien que Cécile imagine un plan, pour l’éloigner, qui a l’issue aura des conséquences tragiques.

French actress Nailia Harzoune (Patients) embodies Elsa and American actress Lily McInerny (Palm Trees and Power Lines) stars as the young Cécile. Although his role has not been confirmed yet, French-Canadian actor and singer Aliocha Schneider will also be part of this new production, which we can’t wait to discover.
