“The 90s”, a major exhibition presented at Tate Modern

Conceived as an immersive journey into the vibrant creativity of the 1990s, The 90s will take over Tate Modern from October 1st, 2026, to February 14th, 2027. The exhibition will trace back a decade marked by a renewed sense of freedom and challenging established norms.

As Britain was emerging from both recession and the Cold War, a new generation of artists and creators gained recognition. Together, they try to debunk the illusory boundaries between contemporary art, fashion, music, and popular culture.

Driven by the energy of the “Cool Britannia” movement, in conjunction with Tony Blair’s rise to power, this era saw the UK assert its cultural influence on a global scale. Galleries increasingly embraced the codes of pop culture, while fashion labels drew their inspiration from the street. Curated by renowned Ghanaian stylist Edward Enninful, the exhibition will spotlight these upheavals through works and archival materials that reflect the dawn of a profound shift.

Along the way, Juergen Teller‘s eccentric photographs and Nick Knight‘s visual experiments will illustrate the transformation of fashion’s language. These images will echo works by Damien Hirst, Gillian Wearing, and Yinka Shonibare. Those key figures from the “Young British Artists” explore the body, identity, and power dynamics. Their work continues to shape contemporary creation.

The subversive fashion of Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen

Aside from that, the irreverent creations of Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan will serve as a reminder of how fashion in the 1990s became a radical playground, where clothing took center stage. Blending punk subversion with experimental flair, these designers upended convention and championed a bold, committed vision of style.

The eternal icon Kate Moss captured by Juergen Teller, the incendiary silhouettes designed by the woman affectionately nicknamed “the empress of punk”… The 90s promises a rereading of a decade defined by powerful images and strong artistic stances. Ones that are still deeply shaping today’s culture.
