    Sirāt by Oliver Laxe

Last May 2025, the stunning road movie Sirāt, set in the blazing Moroccan desert, lit up the rather reasonable official competition in Cannes. The film by Franco-Spanish director Oliver Laxe premiered at the festival and was awarded the Jury Prize. Its mystical tone captivated the audience. The title of the film refers to the bridge over Hell that souls must cross on Judgment Day in the Islamic tradition. A metaphor that permeates the whole direction, oscillating between ecstasy and tragedy. Opening with a grand celebration in the desert, Sirāt unfolds a sensory and spiritual tale in which wandering becomes a metaphysical quest.
