The Housemaid, the hit adaptation of a gripping bestseller
Hollywood’s appetite for book adaptations shows no sign of slowing down. Adapted from Freida McFadden’s bestselling novel The Housemaid, Paul Feig’s latest thriller (Bridesmaids, A Simple Favor) offers relentless suspense. The film adaptation has proven to be just as successful as the novel that inspired it.
Often described as impossible to put down, The Housemaid follows Millie, a young woman recently released from prison who lands a job as a housemaid for the wealthy Winchester family in New York. What initially seems like a fresh start soon turns into a nightmare as she discovers that the Winchesters are hiding dark secrets… The lady of the house may not be as unstable as she appears. Matters become even more complicated when Millie finds herself attracted to the husband.
Since its publication in 2022, Freida McFadden’s novel has become a social-media phenomenon. On TikTok, readers praise its addictive plot, shocking plot twists and developed characters. The success of the first opus prompted the studio to quickly work on a sequel. Actress Kirsten Dunst is set to join the franchise in a major new role opposite Sydney Sweeney.

Sydney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried… A prestigious cast
The production boasts an impressive cast. Actor Brandon Sklenar (It Ends With Us) plays the male lead, Nina’s husband, who turns out to be quite different as he pretends to be. Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria, Anyone But You) takes on the role of the housemaid. Meanwhile, Amanda Seyfried (Mean Girls, Jennifer’s Body) delivers a compelling performance as Nina Winchester, a mother whose picture-perfect image may be a little too good to be true.
In an interview with Numéro, Amanda Seyfried spoke about the film: “It’s something very different from Long Bright River. I really enjoy jumping from one genre to another. The Housemaid is going to be a big event. It belongs to a very specific genre, and we approached it in a very distinctive way. We shot the film earlier this year, and we’re already starting to promote it because it’s based on a very popular book, which was beautifully adapted into a screenplay and filmed. I think that the crazy aspects of the book really come to life in the film. It’s not a secret, anyone who’s read the book knows what is happening.”
The actress added: “I also loved working with Sydney… It was incredibly rewarding. And Paul Feig, the director, has a very unique style… I’d wanted to work with him for years, and I was thrilled that it finally happened.”
A sequel to the original movie is in the works
Thanks to its star-studded cast, the buzz surrounding Freida McFadden’s novels and its plot twists have drawn large audiences. Since its theatrical release in December 2025, the film has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide.
Building on that success, Lionsgate has already announced production of a sequel to the psychological thriller. Its premise? “Years later, Millie is hired by a new family living in a luxurious New York apartment. Once again, the household is hiding dark secrets…” This new chapter is adapted from Freida McFadden’s novel The Housemaid’s Secret.
Currently in development, the filming of The Housemaid’s Secret is set to begin in 2026 and will once again be directed by Paul Feig. Sydney Sweeney and Michele Morrone are confirmed in the cast. This time Millie will come face to face with a new ennemy.
Kirsten Dunst and Paul Anthony Kelly to star in The Housemaid’s Secret
It was announced in March 2026 that Kirsten Dunst would join the cast, stepping into a new on-screen rivalry with Sydney Sweeney and replacing Amanda Seyfried in the franchise’s central dynamic. The future star of Minecraft 2 (scheduled for release in July 2027) will portray the mysterious woman who hires Millie — a woman whom she is never allowed to see. She lives in a house where certain doors remain permanently locked.
“It is a privilege to bring this new chapter to the screen with Kirsten Dunst,” Erin Westerman, president of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, shared. “She is an icon. Her career reflects remarkable boldness and extraordinary range. Opposite the magnetic Sydney Sweeney, she promises an electrifying performance in a world where nothing is ever quite what it seems.”
Paul Anthony Kelly, the lead actor in the cult miniseries Love Story (2026), will also be joining the cast of The Housemaid’s Secret. The actor delivered a compelling and charismatic performance in the series, which chronicled the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette.
The Housemaid’s Secret does not yet have an official release date.
