In 2004, Marc Cherry completely imagined a satirical, biting take on suburban American life. The drama series Desperate Housewives plunged generations of viewers into Wisteria Lane, a fictional street with perfect lawns.
There, the audience met four women — Susan, Lynette, Bree, and Gabrielle — who are juggling secrets, betrayals, and appearances. Narrated by a voice-over, the late character Mary-Alice Young, the show quickly captivated audiences with its dark humour. It became a distorted, yet fascinating mirror of the American middle-class.
Aired on ABC until 2012, the show spanned 180 episodes, garnered 38 Emmy nominations, and had a lasting cultural impact. Its original cast included Teri Hatcher, Marcia Cross, Felicity Huffman, and Eva Longoria. All actresses rose to stardom, while the show’s set became a pilgrimage site for devoted fans. The series even inspired a new wave of reality TV shows, including The Real Housewives.
A new reboot produced by Kerry Washington
In April 2025, Disney announced the development of a spin-off titled Wisteria Lane, produced by American actress Kerry Washington (Django Unchained, Scandal). According to early reports, the script will be written by Natalie Chaidez, known for her work in Heroes and The Flight Attendant.
Although Marc Cherry, the creator of the original series, is not directly involved, he has expressed his interest in a version set in the 1960s. As for the original cast, no names have been officially confirmed, but Eva Longoria expressed her enthusiasm about making a comeback.
This spin-off will focus on five new women, either friends or rivals, living on the iconic street. Behind flawless facades and polished Instagram posts, the characters are obviously hiding unspeakable secrets. A dark, sexy dramedy tailored to today’s social landscape.
The project has sparked mixed reactions. Some fans criticize it for lacking originality, while others are intrigued by this fresh take. Slated for release in 2027, Wisteria Lane promises to rekindle the drama and mystery that made the original show such a success.
