    The trailer of Werwulf (2026).

Werwulf, a werewolf movie directed by Robert Eggers

After the success of Nosferatu (2024), American filmmaker Robert Eggers still has several gothic projects in the pipeline. One of them is a potential adaptation of A Christmas Carol. The famous tale was originally written by British novelist Charles Dickens and focused on the character of Ebenezer Scrooge.

Robert Eggers, a former production designer and fanatic of fantasy films, might tell the story of another iconic monster from the horror bestiary for his upcoming feature – the werewolf. The myth has already been brought to the screen several times, notably in The Wolf Man (1941) and An American Werewolf in London (1981).

Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the cast

The American filmmaker is currently working on Werwulf, a medieval werewolf film. Two stars from the Nosferatu cast are set to reunite. Aaron Taylor-Johnson is expected to lead the cast of Werwulf alongside Lily-Rose Depp. The first images from the shoot show the 26-year-old actress with a swollen face, dressed in medieval leg wraps and sporting a cleft lip…

Actors Willem Dafoe (Poor Things) and Ralph Ineson (The Witch) are also joining the cast of this upcoming feature slated for release in theatres in 2027. The premise? “In 13th-century England, a mysterious creature stalks a foggy countryside, as local folklore become a terrifying reality for the villagers.”

A sequel to the 1980s cult classic Labyrinth?

But Robert Eggers is reportedly working on another project too… A sequel to the film Labyrinth. Thowback to 1982, when American director Jim Henson unknowingly created what would become a future fantasy classic. The special effects in his film The Dark Crystal, developed in collaboration with illustrator Brian Froud and puppeteer Frank Oz, amazed audiences even though critics were less enthusiastic. Nevertheless, Henson established himself as one of the masters of that genre.

A few years later, in 1986, the feature film Labyrinth left a mark on an entire generation. Considered as a campy flop by some or as a welcomed visual trip by others, it was a major critical and commercial failure nevertheless. The film grossed only $12.9 million in the U.S. despite its $25 million budget…

Yet, it was eventually considered as a cult classic, thanks likely to singer David Bowie’s performance. At the time, the artist played Jareth, the Kobold King, a legendary creature akin to a goblin in Germanic mythology.

A film that encapsulates Robert Eggers’ obsessions

Coproduced by George Lucas (Star Wars), Labyrinth is a gothic-tinged musical fantasy that follows Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a teenage girl who enters a magical world after inadvertently offering her baby brother to the mysterious ruler of a strange kingdom… Back in the days, the screenplay was written by Terry Jones (Monty Python) and the soundtrack was created by Trevor Jones and… David Bowie.

Werwulf by Robert Eggers, coming out in theatres on January 6th, 2027.
