2024 Venice Film Festival: Daniel Craig starring in the sultry Queer is bound to surprise everyone

Actor Daniel Craig is stepping away from the universe of James Bond to star in Luca Guadagnino’s eagerly awaited new feature, Queer. Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, which started on August 28th, the wacky fiction imagined by the director of Call Me by your Name and Challengers relates the journey of a desperate American man to Mexico, in search of a mysterious drug.

Gone are the days when Daniel Craig used to wear the impeccable James Bond suits… This year, the actor stands in his “Brat Era” – after the “Brat Summer” trend launched by Charli XCX. The audience already got a chance to see him more laid back on screen, wearing a pink shirt with a little blue scarf, or a short striped beach outfit with sandals in the films Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022). He also appeared alongside Hugh Grant as his life partner in a sequence that was talked-about a lot.

Another stylistic change? Daniel Craig has undergone a metamorphosis as the face of Loewe’s latest campaign. With his long hair, colorful wool jumper with a vintage print, tinted glasses, rock boots, yellow trousers and sneakers, the actor strikes the pose for David Sims wearing looks that are a far cry from those he used to wear as 007.

While the James Bond saga is looking for a new actor to embody its hero, Daniel Craig is increasingly venturing into new horizons.

Daniel Craig, the new hero of Luca Guadagnino’s film Queer, premiering at the Venice Film Festival

Daniel Craig is indeed the lead role in Luca Guadagnino’s brand-new feature, Queer. The Italian director (Call Me by your Name, Challengers) has made a film adaptation of the book of the same name written by the cult and subversive American counter-culture writer William S. Burroughs.

The British-American actor embodies a character that goes against the flow of his previous roles – that of a desperate American expatriate looking for a mysterious drug that possesses telepathic powers in Mexico. As he regularly goes out in gay bars, the protagonist eventually meets a student with whom he will have a tumultuous relationship.

The film has an enigmatic pitch: “Lee recounts his life in Mexico City among American expatriate college students. He is driven to pursue a young man named Allerton, who is based on Adelbert Lewis Marker (1930-1998), a US Navy serviceman recently discharged from Jacksonville, Florida.”

Any other good news? Luca Guadagnino has called on fashion designer Jonathan Anderson to design the costumes for Queer, and composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to compose the soundtrack of the film. The cast includes singer Omar Apollo for his film role in cinema.

This daring and wild feature film will premiere at the Venice Film Festival and is set to be one of the highlights of the festival, which started on Wednesday 28th of August.

The release date of the film Queer (2024) by Luca Guadagnino remains unknown yet.
