Interview with makeup artist Laura Yard

Numéro: How did your passion for makeup come about?

I think it all started when I was still very young, even if I didn’t really realize it at the time. I saw so much beauty around me. Especially when I was looking at my mother, who always put the most beautiful colors on her lips, had fabulous hair and was always dressed with remarkable elegance. Without knowing it, she awakened something in me. Then, when my connection to art grew stronger, I started associating it with makeup. I feel like my journey really began at that moment.

When did you decide to become a makeup artist?

I was quite young when I realized that this was what I wanted to do with my life, even though I didn’t know exactly which direction to take. At 19, I left school and went for it. Honestly, at the beginning, I didn’t know much, so I started to practice on myself and others. I think what really pushed me forward was the excitement of discovering a world that I didn’t fully understand and throwing myself into. I have never hesitated to listen to my heart and I have been lucky to always have the unconditional support of my family who have really helped me to follow my passion and do what I love most.

My art has to capture a feeling, an emotion that I then have to translate into a makeup look.” — Laura Yard

How would you describe your style?

My style is a mix of boldness and elegance. I love subtle glam and I love telling stories through makeup. I can be inspired by the person I have in front of me, or by something I’ve seen in the street or by a film, an extract from a book… My art has to capture a feeling, an emotion that I then have to translate into a makeup look.

The encounter that has had the greatest impact on you since you started?

The people I met left me with lasting memories because the process of creating with other artists is terribly powerful. There are so many moments in my journey that have touched and inspired me…

What has been the best experience of your career?

If I had to choose one experience in particular, it would be the first glam I made for the Bianca Saunders show. Entering that kind of environment was a first for me. I will remember it for the rest of my life. It was amazing.

Are you inspired by other artists?

I get a lot of inspiration from different art forms. My grandfather was a great painter who had a major influence on my work, as did Salvador Dalí. Beyond his inexplicable, breathtaking work, what struck me the most about him is the way he managed to transpose his spirit into his art. He gave the viewer the impression of being able to dive into his universe.

    Laura Yard’s beauty routine

Every evening, I start by using micellar water from La Roche-Posay for sensitive skin, followed by the Clinique cleansing balm and by the CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser. Once my face is clean, I use a warm, damp towel to open my pores and when my face is dry, I apply my retinol serum from La Roche-Posay and finally finish with the Clinique Overnight Recovery Cream.

In the morning, I wash my face quickly with water or a mix of rose water, then apply my vitamin C serum from Drunk Elephant, followed by Skinceuticals eye cream. And finishing with a moisturizer and sunscreen.

For my makeup, I like a luminous look. I use the Armani Luminous Silk Foundation as a base, followed by Pat McGrath Sublime Perfection Concealer, which is my fave at the moment. Then, I add a little blush and highlighter and end with a lip oil or balm. Since I love juicy lips, I always carry my oil with me.

    Three of her favorite products

I use Aloe Vera for my skin and hair. It’s my natural moisturizer and favorite mask. It helps with my eczema and prevents my skin from drying out too. I try to use it twice a month. I also love the sea moss from Tree of Saba… Perfect as a mask or in a tea, this is one of the best anti-aging recipes.

Finally, I use the waterproof mascara from 3CE. A must-have! It lasts all day long, curls the lashes perfectly and does not smudge. One product that will always be part of my top 3 is the Shiseido eyelash curler, which is a classic for a perfect result.
