Why was Gosha Rubchinskiy’s show in Kaliningrad such an event ?

The high profile Russian designer Gosha Rubchinskiy presented his fall-winter 2017 collection yesterday in Kaliningrad.

Gosha Rubchinskiy, spearhead of statement streetwear with its underground edge, never stops reinventing the men's fashion scene. In 2008 he presented his first ever runway show at the alternative Fashion Week in Moscow, revealing his passion for a Russian street culture in a serious state of flux and his obsession with a post-soviet youth. Playing with logos, his collaboration with big streetwear brands of the 1990s such as Fila and an exciting street casting instantly made him the number one name in contemporary urban fashion. A designer, but also photographer and director he reveals Russia today as much through the prism of clothing as his photographic lens. Series of photos such as Youth Hotel depict a Moscow without any filters or artifice where the muscovite cool kids reign supreme.

For his new Autumn-Winter 2017 collection, the brand set up camp for the first time in Kaliningrad in Russia. At the end of the show, the designer stated how much he "liked the idea of a part of Russia installed in the middle of Europe." After a particularly well-received presentation in Florence last June, this choice of location demonstrates Rubchinskiy's desire to create a symbolic link with the West, just as he completes an unprecedented collaboration with the German giant Adidas. The runway show presented a collection inspired by the world of football, harnessing the codes that have become the label's signature: sharp tailoring and sportswear steeped in history and Russian tradition, with headwear designed by British milliner, Stephen Jones.
