Lady Gaga makes her big comeback as a super-heroine of love

Dès l’ouverture de son nouveau clip Stupid Love, dévoilé dans la nuit du 28 février, Lady Gaga nous met en garde : “Le monde pourrit dans les conflits. De nombreuses tribus se battent pour dominer. Pendant que les Spirituels dorment et prient pour la paix, les Gentils punks se battent pour CHROMATICA.” Qu’à cela ne tiennent, la reine de la pop est de retour en héroïne de science-fiction entourée d’une armée de punk prônant l’amour dans toute la galaxie. Réalisé par Daniel Askill, notamment connu pour avoir réalisé les clips Chandelier et The Greatest de la chanteuse Sia, le clip de Stupid Love  recrée une atmosphère Star Trek aux inspirations dignes des productions nippones telles que Power Rangers, Sailor Moon et même l'atmosphère de jeux vidéos de combat. Avec des chorégraphies réglées comme du papier à musique, Lady Gaga s’affiche en total look rose bonbon perdue au milieu d’un no man’s land cosmique où les montagnes scintillantes s’étendant à perte de vue : baptisée Chromatica, cette planète fictive s'annonce comme le nouveau terrain d’exploration de la chanteuse.

Ce retour attendu en musique arrive après quatre années qui ont permis à Lady Gaga de s'illustrer dans divers projets : une bande-originale et un rôle principal dans la fiction autobiographique de Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born (2018), qui ont valu à la chanteuse d'être multi-récompensée d’un Oscar, d’un Golden Globes et d’un BAFTA Awards, mais également le lancement de sa ligne de cosmétique Haus Laboratories en 2019, misant sur la beauté inclusive à l’instar de la ligne Fenty Beauty de Rihanna. Alors que son dernier album studio Joanne (2016) opérait une rupture en dépeignant une Lady Gaga fragile et mise à nue, chantant l’illusion de l’amour dans des mélodies introspectives aux sonorités country, la star planétaire semble entamer les années 2020 en se replongeant dans son esthétique d’antan : des mises en scènes extravagantes, une pop-électro détonante et des blessures guéries. En effet, si dans Perfect Illusion – premier single de Joanne –, l'Américaine regrettait “Ce n'était pas de l'amour / c'était une parfaite illusion”, voici qu'elle chante désormais dans Stupid Love : “Tout ce que j'ai toujours voulu c'est de l'amour / (…) Pas besoin d'une raison, ni de m'excuser, je veux ton amour stupide”. Une ode à la candeur de la passion naissante qui augure probablement un sixième album plus enjoué.

From the beginning of her new video for the track Stupid Love, unveiled on February 28th, Lady Gaga warns us: “The world rots in conflict. Many tribes battle for dominance. While the Spiritual ones pray and sleep for peace, the Kindness punks fight for CHROMATICA.” The pop queen is back and this time embodies a science-fiction heroine surrounded by an army of punks preaching love across the galaxy. Directed by Daniel Askill, known for his work with Sia on the videos for Chandelier and The Greatest, the video for Stupid Love, recreates a Star Trek ambiance inspired by Japanese productions such as Power Rangers, Sailor Moon and even draws on fighting video game vibe. With a choreography that’s as tight as clockwork, Lady Gaga, dressed head to toe in candy pink, is lost in the midst of a cosmic no-man’s-land where the mountains shimmer into the distance: baptised Chromatica, this fictitious planet heralds the singer’s new exploration ground.

This anticipated return to music comes after four years that have allowed Lady Gaga to shine in various other projects: a soundtrack and a lead role in Bradley Cooper's biopic fiction, A Star is Born (2018), which led to the singer winning an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award, but also the launch of her cosmetics line Haus Laboratories in 2019, focusing on inclusive beauty, in much the same vein as Rihanna's Fenty Beauty line. While her last studio album Joanne (2016) broke away from previous work by depicting a fragile and denuded Lady Gaga, singing about the illusion of love in introspective melodies with country sounds, the global superstar is starting the 2020s by plunging right back into her aesthetic of yesteryear: extravagant sets, explosive pop-electro and healed wounds. Indeed, while in Perfect Illusion – the first single from Joanne -, the American regretted “It wasn't love / It was a perfect illusion”, now on Stupid Love we hear the lyrics: “Cause all I ever wanted was love / (…) I don't need a reason, Not sorry, I want your stupid love”. An ode to the candour of an emerging passion that augurs well for a more playful sixth album.
