A rapper records his album down the telephone… in prison

Provocation ou petit exploit, Drakeo The Ruler a produit un album complet depuis sa cellule. 19 titres élaborés au sein de l’établissement pénitentiaire Men’s Central Jail à Los Angeles, ville d’origine du rappeur. Thank You For Using GTL (2020) est le fruit d’une collaboration acharnée entre l’artiste californien, son producteur et le collectif The Stinc Team qui rassemble les artistes Ralfy the Plug, Ketchy The Great, SaysoTheMac, Bambino, Good Finesse et Young Bull. Un album entièrement enregistré via les téléphones pénitenciers de la compagnie GTL (ancien Global Tel*Link), impressionnant de par son ingéniosité et son discours acerbe à l’encontre du système judiciaire américain.

Des incarcérations répétées aux motifs contestables

Drakeo The Ruler est malheureusement déjà passé par la case prison à plusieurs reprises. À l’âge de 12 ans seulement, Darrell Caldwell (de son vrai nom) est arreté pour la première fois. Un brusque passage dans le monde qui ne l’empechera pas de connaître une carrière musicale florissante entachée par de multiples arrestations pour des motifs plus ou moins avérés. En 2017, alors qu’il vient de sortir de prison pour détention illégale d’arme à feu, Drakeo The Ruler réalise en l’espace d’un mois Cold Devil, une mixtape de 16 titres évoquant déjà les travers de la police de Los Angeles. Son quotidien de rappeur gansta n’est pas un fantasme, et ses deux arrestations suivantes en témoignent.

Actuellement incarcéré au centre pénitencier de Men’s Central Jail de Los Angeles depuis 2019, Drakeo The Ruler attend le verdict des jurés. Une véritable bataille juridique s’engage pour le rappeur, ses proches et le collectif Stinc Team, contre ce qui s’apparente à un acharnement judiciaire. The Stinc Team étant connu pour son aversion explicite pour la police de Los Angeles, cette dernière ne se gêne pas pour se servir des textes coup de poing du groupe de rappeurs pour tourner la situation en sa faveur. Entre images de clips vidéo et paroles de chansons, tout devient pièce à conviction et preuve de la culpabilité de Drakeo The Ruler. Ce début d’année voit sortir la mixtape Free Drakeo, dénonçant l'abus de pouvoir et le racisme inhérent aux mesures prises à l’encontre du rappeur, aujourd’hui incarcéré sans véritable preuve tangible. Dans cette mixtape, le titre introductif Letter From Me to You Freestyle (Intro) mêle un freestyle réalisé par Drakeo The Ruler à travers un téléphone, ainsi que des fragments extraits de divers morceaux liés entre eux par un même slogan : “Free Drakeo”.

Un album clandestin remarquable

Sa voix et ses textes ne pouvant être réduits au silence, Drakeo The Ruler continue de nourrir sa musique depuis sa cellule de prison. Celui qui a été mis derrière les barreaux pour ses textes se retrouve à en composer de nouveaux à travers le haut-parleur des téléphones de la prison. Le comble dans tout cela ? Utiliser le matériel de la compagnie téléphonique GTL, connue pour son lobbysme influent se comptant en millions de dollars chaque années alloués au centre pénitencier de Los Angeles, et de ce fait, en partie responsable du maintien du système judiciaire en place corrompu par un capitalisme à toute épreuve. Thank You for Using GTL sonne alors comme une triste dérision.

Pourtant ce contexte de production particulier déteint à merveille sur cet album, créant un sensation d’immédiateté et de proximité rare. Alors que Drakeo The Ruler délivre un rap dans lequel il se désole de sa condition de présumé coupable, son producteur JoogSZN l’enregistre à l’autre bout du fil et s’active à monter l’album en studio. Un mix trap qui laisse place aux couplets rauques et résolus du rappeur, donnant avec une simplicité fascinante des mélodies accrocheuses. Le Los Angeles Times qualifiera d’ailleurs le californien d’artiste le plus original de la côte ouest. Superposant riffs entêtants, voix parlées et chantées, et extrait de conversation, il s’attaque à la situation américaine et revendique haut et fort son innocence. Avec le titre Social Media Can't Help You, il s'aventure aussi bien du côté de l’artificialité des réseaux sociaux, que de la corruption de la classe politique et de la frustration d’un Afro-Américain dans une société hostile. Malgré l’effet brouillé due à la communication par téléphone, l’intensité émotionnelle ne se perd pas et la force poétique des mots de Drakeo The Ruler s’élèvent en fond de toile, tandis qu’une voix féminine préenregistrée se détache clairement et tourne en boucle tout au long de la mixtape – “Thank you for using GTL”.

A provocation or daring feat – or both – Drakeo The Ruler has produced a complete album from his prison cell. Nineteen tracks elaborated at the Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles, the rapper’s hometown. Thank You For Using GTL (2020) is the fruit of a tenacious collaboration between the Californian artist, his producer and The Stinc Team collective which brings together artists Ralfy the Plug, Ketchy The Great, SaysoTheMac, Bambino, Good Finesse and Young Bull. This album, recorded entirely via the penitentiary phones belonging to the company GTL (formerly Global Tel * Link), is impressive in its ingenuity and its outspoken take on the American judicial system. 

Repeated imprisonments on questionable grounds

Drakeo The Ruler has already been through the prison system several times. At the tender age of 12, Darrell Caldwell (his real name) was arrested for the first time. A sudden passage in this world but which didn’t stop his musical career flourishing albeit marred by multiple arrests for more or less proven reasons. In 2017, just out of prison for the illegal possession of a firearm, Drakeo The Ruler took a month to produce Cold Devil, a mixtape of 16 titles pointing to the faults of the Los Angeles police force. His daily life as a gangsta rapper is not a fantasy, and his two subsequent arrests bear witness to this.

Incarcerated at the Men’s Central Jail of Los Angeles since 2019, Drakeo The Ruler is waiting for the jury’s verdict. A furious legal battle is currently raging between the rapper, his relatives and the Stinc Team collective, against what seems to be fierce judicial harassment. The Stinc Team is well-known for its explicit dislike of the Los Angeles police, who don’t hesitate in using the rappers’ punchy words to turn the situation in their favour. As far as they’re concerned, images of video clips and the song lyrics are all evidence and proof of Drakeo The Ruler's guilt. The beginning of this year saw the release of the Free Drakeo mixtape, denouncing the abuse of power and the inherent racism in the measures taken against the rapper, imprisoned without any real tangible evidence. In this mixtape, the introductory track Letter From Me to You Freestyle (Intro) is a freestyle mix directed by Drakeo The Ruler over the telephone, as well as fragments extracted from various pieces all linked together with the same slogan: “Free Drakeo”.

A remarkable clandestine album

His voice and his lyrics won’t be silenced, as Drakeo The Ruler continues to nourish his music from his prison cell. The man who was put behind bars for his texts is now composing new ones over the loud-speakers of the prison telephones owned by the GTL telecommunications company, known for its influential lobbying and the millions of dollars allocated each year to the Los Angeles penitentiary centre, and therefore, partly responsible for keeping the judiciary corrupted by capitalism in place. Thank You for Using GTL sounds like serious mockery. 

Yet this unusual production context rubs off beautifully onto this album, creating a rare sense of immediacy and proximity. While Drakeo The Ruler delivered a rap lamenting his condition as presumed guilty, his producer JoogSZN recorded it down the other end of the line and started to edit the album in the studio. The mix tape gives way to the rapper's raucous and resolute verses, offering us fascinatingly simple yet highly catchy melodies. The Los Angeles Times has called the Californian the most original artist on the West Coast. Superimposing heady riffs, spoken and sung voices along with excerpts from conversations, he tackles the American situation while claiming his innocence loud and clear. With the track Social Media Can't Help You, he looks at the artificiality of social media, as well as the corruption of the political class and the frustrations of an African-American in a hostile society. Despite the slightly muffled effect resulting from the telephone communications, none of the emotional intensity is lost and the poetic force of Drakeo The Ruler's words rises in the background, while a pre-recorded female voice rings out clearly looping throughout the mixtape – “Thank you for using GTL”.
