Black Panther : Wakanda Forever : 3 raisons de regarder le film Marvel sur Canal+

1. Black Panther : Wakanda Forever, un film sur des femmes puissantes

Dans le somptueux premier volet du blockbuster Marvel Black Panther (2018), deux hommes charismatiques s’imposaient. On succombait à la prestance du regretté Chadwick Boseman (décédé à 43 ans d’un cancer du côlon en 2020) qui incarnait le héros plein de sagesse T’Challa alias Black Panther. Et Michael B. Jordan excellait dans le rôle du maléfique et envoûtant Killmonger. Mais sa suite, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, est avant-tout un film de femmes. Ce sont elles, qui faisant preuve d’une belle sororité, portent ce second volet plus intimiste qui voit le royaume – très avancé technologiquement – du Wakanda menacé par Namor, roi de Talocan, un monde sous-marin fascinant. Après la mort du roi T’Challa, le Wakanda traverse une période de deuil et c’est la reine Ramonda (Angela Bassett) qui doit prendre sa place, avant d’être remplacée par sa fille Shuri (l’attachante et badass Letitia Wright). Face au danger, elles peuvent également compter sur d’autres forces vives comme la rusée Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), les farouches Dora Milaje ou la nouvelle venue Riri Williams alias Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) qui possède un don irréel pour l’informatique.

Au royaume futuriste de Wakanda, les femmes sont souveraines, guerrières, as de la technologie ou grandes scientifiques. Et leurs pouvoirs égalent ceux des hommes, voire les surpassent. Bluffantes, toutes les actrices donnent le meilleur d’elles-même pour imposer Black Panther : Wakanda Forever en film de super-héros féministe, prônant l’indépendance et l’empowerment. Cela permet à ce volet de retrouver un nouveau souffle même si on se perd un peu dans le nombre de thématiques que le long-métrage veut évoquer en même temps : le processus difficile du deuil, la guerre, le poids des ressources naturelles d’une nation, le colonialisme, les mécanismes complexes du désir de vengeance…

2. Une bande-son réussie avec Rihanna, Tems, Burna Boy

Black Panther : Wakanda Forever est une histoire de résurrection. Et il place la maternité et la filiation au cœur de son récit. Récemment devenue mère et longtemps absente de l’industrie musicale, la superstar originaire de la Barbade Rihanna semblait l’artiste idéale pour signer la chanson finale du film. C’est pour rendre hommage à Chadwick Boseman que la chanteuse a accepté de faire son grand retour musical avec ce film. Six ans après son excellent album Anti, la boss de Fenty Beauty émeut avec ses envolées lyriques sur le poignant, mélancolique et épuré, Lift Me Up. Mais ce n’est pas le seul moment de grâce de la bande originale de Black Panther : Wakanda Forever. On peut retrouver sur la bande-son des artistes aussi passionnants que la chanteuse et compositrice nigériane Tems, Burna Boy, le rappeur Rema, Stormzy, Future ou la révélation TikTok PinkPantheress. Et à l’image de son casting et de son équipe de production, le film Marvel met un point d’honneur à réunir des artistes en majorité noirs.

3. Un vibrant hommage à Chadwick Boseman

Après le décès de Chadwick Boseman, le réalisateur de Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, n’a pas voulu attribuer son rôle à un autre acteur. Il a préféré imaginer une toute autre histoire, que l’on ne spoilera pas ici. Et pour mieux rendre hommage à celui qui est devenu une légende, il a décidé de débuter ce second volet, très sombre, de la saga par une cérémonie d’adieu poignante. On y découvre tous les habitants du Wakanda, vêtus de costumes blancs impressionnants, marcher derrière le cercueil noir de Black Panther orné de la fameuse panthère. Le chagrin, immense, est alors peu à peu transcendé par la musique et la danse dans un déluge d’images époustouflantes et de percussions cathartique, magnifié par la technologie IMAX.

On sent alors, dans la fragilité teintée de force dégagée par leurs regards, que les acteurs ont dû faire le deuil de l’acteur Chadwick Boseman qui fut leur compagnon et leur ami en même temps que les personnages étaient en train de pleurer, à l’écran, leur roi disparu. Plus tard dans le film, le beau visage de T’Challa apparaît subtilement, lors de flashbacks, provoquant une vive émotion chez le spectateur. Mais le climax en matière de frissons sera atteint lors de la scène post-générique. Une surprise de taille attend le public, prouvant que l’esprit de Black Panther est bel et bien vivant. Et qu’il pourrait rugir encore pour de nombreuses années à venir…

In the sumptuous first part of the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther (2018), two charismatic men stood out. We succumbed to the charms of the late Chadwick Boseman – who died of colon cancer at the age of 43 in 2020 – in his role as the majestic and wise hero T’Challa, aka Black Panther. Michael B. Jordan also excelled as the evil, terrifying, and bewitching Killmonger. But the sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is above all a film about women. In a beautiful demonstration of sorority, they are the ones who carry this second opus, which witnesses the very technologically advanced kingdom of Wakanda threatened from all sides – notably by Namor, king of the fascinating underwater world of Talocan. After the death of King T’Challa, Wakanda goes through a period of mourning and Queen Ramonda (the sublime Angela Bassett) must take the throne, before being replaced by her daughter Shuri (the endearing and badass Letitia Wright). In the face of danger, they can also count on other forces, such as the cunning Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), the fierce Dora Milaje, or the newcomer Riri Williams, aka Ironheart (Dominique Thorne), who possesses an extraordinary gift for computer science.

In the futuristic kingdom of Wakanda, women are rulers, warriors, technological magicians, or great scientists. Their powers equal or surpass those of men. All the actresses give their best to hold Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as a great feminist film, advocating for female independence and empowerment, while the film subtly evokes other themes such as the difficult process of mourning and the complex mechanisms at work behind the desire for revenge.

2. A captivating soundtrack

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a story of resurrection that places motherhood and parenthood at the heart of its narrative. Barbados-born superstar Rihanna, who has recently became a mother herself and has been absent from the music industry for a long time, appeared to be the ideal artist to sign the final song of the film. The singer agreed to make her musical comeback with this film, as a tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Six years after her excellent album Anti, the Fenty Beauty boss moves us with her lyrical flights of fancy on the poignant, melancholic, and pure Lift Me Up. But that is not the only moment of grace on the soundtrack. The soundtrack features exciting artists, such as Nigerian singer- songwriters Tems, Burna Boy, rappers Rema, Stormzy, Future, and TikTok revelation PinkPantheress. Just like its cast and production team, the Marvel film devotes significant attention to featuring mostly black artists.

3. A vibrant tribute to Chadwick Boseman

After Chadwick Boseman’s passing, the director of Black Panther, Ryan Coogler, did not want to assign the role to another actor. He would rather create a completely different storyline, which we won’t spoil here. In order to pay the best tribute to the man who became a legend, he decided to start the second dark and intense opus of the saga with a particularly poignant farewell ceremony. We can see all the inhabitants of Wakanda dressed in impressive white costumes walking behind Black Panther’s black coffin, decorated with the famous panther symbol. The immense grief is then gradually transcended by music and dance in a series of breathtaking images and cathartic drums, magnified by the IMAX technology.

In the fragile yet strong looks in the actors’ eyes, one can feel that they had to mourn the loss of their partner and friend Chadwick Boseman on screen at the same time their characters are mourning the loss of their king. Later in the film, T’Challa’s handsome face subtly appears in flashbacks, triggering strong emotions in the viewer. However, the emotional climax will eventually peak in the post-closing credits scene. A major surprise awaits the audience, proving that the spirit of Black Panther is alive and well, and that it will roar for many years to come…

Réussite visuelle totale et film essentiel en termes de représentation des cultures africaine et afro-américaine, le premier volet de Black Panther avait généré 1,3 milliard de dollars au box-office américain et 3,8 millions d’entrées en France en 2018. Devenu un vrai phénomène culturel, c’est aussi le long-métrage le plus rentable signé d’un réalisateur noir et le premier film de super-héros à avoir été nommé pour l’Oscar du meilleur long-métrage (en 2019). Mais après la mort de son acteur principal, Chadwick Boseman, en 2020, l’enjeu était de taille pour la saga.
