Dua Lipa: what’s to expect from her new album?

In the past few months, the talented and gorgeous Dua Lipa has been on all fronts. Last May 2023, the British-Albanian singer lit up the Cannes Film Festival 2023 with her appearance, before starring as a mermaid in the blockbuster Barbie last summer, for which she penned the hit Dance the Night.

The singer-songwriter has also collaborated with Versace on a collection of colorful, sexy clothes entitled La Vacanza, and transformed her Instagram account into a real fashion show. Last Wednesday, January 31, she was seen alongside Henry Cavill in the film Argylle. Yet the woman who hosts a newsletter, Service95, a podcast and a book club, has also taken the time to record a new album aside from her many adventures...

Training Season and Houdini: Dua Lipa’s two new releases

Over the past few days, Dua Lipa has been raising attention about a brand-new single. On Instagram, the singer posted a photo of herself hanging from a gym bar to announce the release of a brand new single, Training Season, on February 15th, 2024. After unveiling a rather catchy extract, the star explained her song in a press release: “This track is about the fact that my season of training is over and that I have grown in every way from all my experiences. I have never felt so confident, clear and strong.”

The track will succeed Dua Lipa’s latest hit, Houdini, released at midnight on November 9th, 2023. It has been written by Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, Tobias Jesso Jr., Danny L Harle (a close collaborator of singer Caroline Polachek), and Caroline Ailin, who has previously collaborated with Dua Lipa, notably on the hit New Rules. Houdini is also the title of a song by singer Kate Bush, as well as being that of a famous illusionist who, during his escape acts, would kiss his wife in order to pass a secret key into her mouth. Could Kate Bush be one of the major inspirations behind the new British-Albanian’s song? Not quite...

Very electro-pop and synthpop, the powerful hit Houdini sounds more like a successful blend of Dua Lipa’s magical retro-futuristic, disco-pop universe, Tame Impala’s synthetic, cosmic aesthetics and Daft Punk’s world at the end of the track. The addictive voice of the singer transforms that song into an instant classic, the kind that sticks in your head for long after you have listened to it, and that you will eventually want to play over and over again to keep the party going. As for the lyrics, full of sexual double entendres (“I come and I go”), they take the singer into an era of her career that brings her closer to Madonna than a well-behaved pop star.

The single Houdini marks the opening of a new chapter in Dua Lipa’s discography. The flamboyant star describes the track, which she played to passers-by on the street in London prior to its release, as a transcription of “that 4am feeling when the night is coming to a close and you’re a bit sweaty, but you just don’t want the party to end".

She adds in a press release: “This track represents the most light, freeing parts of my singledom (...) Houdini is very tongue in cheek, exploring the idea of whether or not someone is really worth my time. You never know exactly where something may take you, that’s the beauty of being open to whatever life throws your way.”

The athletic, sexy clip unveiled with the track was directed by Manu Cossu and cinematographer André Chemetoff and produced by Dua Lipa’s ex-boyfriend Romain Gavras. It shows the pop star dancing in a gymnasium wearing Dion Lee, Martine Rose and Puma, in an atmosphere reminiscent of the movie Flashdance and Madonna’s music video for Hung up. Ridiculed at her debuts because of her simplistic moves, the pop star has proven that she has nothing to envy Beyoncé or Rihanna when it comes to perform a wild choreography.

Dua Lipa’s new synthpop album with Tame Impala scheduled for 2024

Over the past few months, Dua Lipa has been secretly working on the successor to the excellent and danceable Future Nostalgia (2020). And as The New York Times Style Magazine recently hinted, the 28-year-old superstar has indeed been working with Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker at his own Australian studio, the Wave House. Danny L Harle, a major figure of the label PC Music, is also taking part in the project. According to Rolling Stone, Kevin Parker wrote eight of the eleven tracks on the album. All of them foreshadow a psychedelic, indie, synthpop, and electro-pop-inspired record for 2024. The singer surely had to rework the retro-futuristic, disco-pop universe championed by Future Nostalgia to make it even more lyrical, with Kevin Parker’s help. Yet she has apparently kept the pop format of her songs.

In the columns of Rolling Stone, Dua Lipa talks about her new album as a “psychedelic, pop tribute to British rave culture.” She also cites Primal Scream, Massive Attack, Oasis, Gorillaz and Blur, as well as Moby, as her influences. “This record feels a bit more raw. I want to capture the essence of youth and freedom, having fun and letting things happen, whether it’s good or bad.”

Clues to Dua Lipa’s upcoming album revealed on Instagram

A few weeks ago, the face of the fragrance for Yves Saint Laurent Beauté changed the photos of herself she posted on YouTube, Facebook and streaming platforms, and deleted all her old ones from her Instagram account to adopt more kaleidoscopic visuals.

Then , on October 12th, 2023, Dua Lipa shared a stunning image of herself shot by English photographer and videographer Tyrone Lebon, who directed the music video for Frank Ocean’s Nikes. She appeared as a redhead, wearing Helmut Lang’s Bowie top from 1994. Does it forecast a more independent, rock, experimental, cutting-edge, and above all, less mainstream musical direction? Her bold, Julia Fox-like new hair color suggests that Dua Lipa is ready to take risks, just like Doja Cat, who has recently undergone a true aesthetic and artistic revolution.

We can be sure of one thing - she seems to be heading in a hedonistic direction. Indeed, on her official website (dualipa.com), the singer invites people to enter their email address on a contact form in order to receive “happiness”, “joy”, “fun”, “optimism”, “energy” and “love”. Is she done with “happy-sad” tracks? We don’t know yet, but we hope that the artist hasn’t given up on federative hits like Fever or Break My Heart...

Houdini, un avant-goût du nouvel album de la chanteuse

Le 9 novembre 2023, à minuit, Dua Lipa sortait le tube Houdini, qui donnait un avant-goût de Radical Optimism. Le titre a été écrit par Kevin Parker de Tame Impala, Tobias Jesso Jr., Danny L Harle (proche collaborateur de la chanteuse Caroline Polachek) et Caroline Ailin, qui a déjà travaillé avec Dua Lipa (notamment sur le tube New Rules). "Houdini" est aussi le titre d'un morceau de la chanteuse Kate Bush, en plus d'être celui d'un célèbre illusionniste qui, lors de ses numéros d'évasion, embrassait sa femme qui lui faisait alors passer dans sa bouche une clé. Kate Bush serait-elle l'une des inspirations majeures du nouvel titre de la Britannico-Albanaise ? Pas tout à fait... 

Très électro-pop/synthpop, le tube en puissance Houdini sonne plutôt comme un mélange réussi entre l'univers disco-pop rétro-futuriste magique de Dua Lipa, celui synthétique et cosmique de Tame Impala et celui de Daft Punk (sur la fin du titre). La voix de chanteuse, addictive, transforme cette chanson en classique instantané, de ceux qui restent longtemps en tête après écoute et qu'on a envie de se repasser en boucle, pour ne pas que la fête s'arrête. Quant aux paroles pleines de doubles sens sexuels (I come and I go), elles font entrer la chanteuse dans une ère de sa carrière qui la rapproche plus d'une Madonna que d'une pop star sage.

Le single Houdini signe l'ouverture d'un nouveau chapitre de la discographie de Dua Lipa. La star flamboyante décrit ce morceau, qu'elle a fait écouter à des passants, dans la rue, à Londres, avant sa sortie comme une retranscription de "ce sentiment à 4h du matin lorsque la nuit touche à sa fin, que l’on est un peu en sueur mais que l’on ne veut pas que la fête se termine".  

Elle ajoute, dans un communiqué de presse : "Ce titre représente les moments les plus légers et les plus libres de mon célibat (...) Houdini explore avec une certaine ironie l’idée de savoir si oui ou non quelqu'un vaut la peine que je m’intéresse à lui ou s’il faut au contraire l'ignorer. On ne sait jamais exactement où les choses vous mènent, mais c’est cela qui est beau, être ouvert.e à tout ce que la vie met sur votre chemin. J’ai vraiment hâte de partager ce sentiment avec mes fans." 

Le clip athlétique et sexy, dévoilé en même temps que le morceau, a été réalisé par Manu Cossu et le directeur de la photographie André Chemetoff et produit par Romain Gavras, l'ex-petit ami de Dua Lipa. On y voit la star de la pop danser - en Dion Lee, Martine Rose et Puma - dans un gymnase, dans une atmosphère qui évoque celle du film Flashdance et le clip Hung up de Madonna. Moquée au début de sa carrière pour ses déhanchés pas assez élaborés, la pop star prouve qu'elle n'a rien à envier à Beyoncé ou à Rihanna en matière de chorégraphies exaltées.

Illusion et Training Season, les tubes de l'été de Dua Lipa

Le 4 février dernier, la star a interprété un nouveau tube co-écrit avec Kevin Parker de Tame Impala aux Grammy Awards 2024, lors d'une performance enflammée, où elle s'accrochait à un cube aux allures métalliques. Le 15 février 2024, Dua Lipa publiait ce nouveau single excitant : Training Season. Dans un communiqué, la star a déclaré à propos de cette chanson entraînante : “Ce morceau parle de la fin de ma période d'entraînement et du fait que je sois sortie grandie de toutes mes expériences. Je ne me suis jamais sentie aussi confiante, claire ou indépendante. Et bien que nos périodes d'entraînement ne se terminent jamais réellement, on commence à trouver de la beauté dans la rencontre de la personne avec qui les vivre. On cesse de chercher des débutants et on s'intéresse davantage à la possibilité d'avoir quelqu'un qui nous correspond davantage, avec qui grandir." 

Alors que la mélodie lorgne du côté d'ABBA, le clip de Training Season montre Dua Lipa assise à un café, rêveuse et inquiète, tandis qu'une horde d'hommes essaient d'attirer son attention. Une parabole des sites de rencontres. Avec Training Season, la star prouve qu'on peut faire des morceaux à la fois efficaces et exigeants, mainstream et pointus. Pour certains, elle est même en train de sauver la pop de la mièvrerie et des formules éculées. 

C'est ce que confirme, le 11 avril, à minuit, la sortie du tube de l'été en puissante Illusion. Un single de synthpop ultra efficace accompagné d'un clip sensuel, tourné à Barcelone, où l'on croise des plongeurs de haut niveaux et des pros de la natation synchronisée. Les couleurs et la lumière évoquent une vidéo culte : celle de Slow de Kylie Minogue. Dua Lipa s'inscrit ainsi dans la filiation des chanteuses pop qui savent proposer des chansons assz aventureuses pour séduire les exigeants critiques musicaux.
