Louis Vuitton takes over the Palais des Papes for its Cruise 2026 show

Just hundreds of kilometers away from the Croisette, Louis Vuitton unveiled its Cruise 2026 collection at the Palais des Papes in Avignon.

As the former papal residence during the 14th century, the Palais des Papes in Avignon now echoes the Vatican and the election of its new pontiff, Pope Leo XIV. While French artist Jean-Michel Othoniel is preparing to adorn the ancient stone walls with his glass and pearl creations by the end of June, a very different Eminence has taken over the venue – the house of Louis Vuitton and its artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière.

This nod to the current religious events seems to amuse the designer and the rows of seats set up for the Cruise 2026 show are proof. The red velvet chairs are shaped like the cathedra used by bishops. But here, the handpicked list of guests is attending a very different kind of mass – that of jet-setters from all around the world, coming to scout out their future looks for a summer on the French Riviera or the Amalfi Coast.

The Louis Vuitton Cruise 2026 collectino

In the main courtyard of the Palais des Papes, Louis Vuitton’s creations took on an almost solemn dimension. Coats were adorned with fur collars and cuffs, along with a multitude of rich embroideries and gold embellishments, giving them an almost celestial aspect. One could notice the high leather gladiator sandals, adorned with metallic, gemstones-like details, whose final appearance is reminiscent of ancient chalices… Whether it was intentional or just a coincidental reference, these sumptuous and history-filled elements in sync with the venue shaped powerful silhouettes. That impression was especially emphasized by the embroidered capes, voluminous blouses and dresses, and, above all, the luxurious fabrics at the heart of this Cruise 2026 collection.

On the sidelines of the festivities and red carpet appearances taking place just a hundred kilometers away at the Cannes Film Festival, Louis Vuitton capitalized on this general excitement to gather a major assembly of stars. Among them, of course, were the house’s muses Emma Stone, Alicia Vikander, Saoirse Ronan and Sophie Turner. Nicolas Ghesquière’s close friends were also present, including Chloë Grace Moretz, Jaden Smith, Noémie Merlant, Justine Triet, Zaho de Sagazan, Lous and the Yakuza, Stacy Martin, Marina Foïs, and Shay Mitchell. In short, enough to measure up to the biggest event currently taking place on the Croisette…
