Which actor is going to portray Andy Warhol in an upcoming biopic?
After years of rumours, the biopic on Andy Warhol’s life is finally going to be made. The pioneer of the Pop Art movement will be portrayed by Jared Leto – who shared the news on his Instagram page on the date of birth of the American artist (08/06).
By Lucas Aubry.
The “pope” of Pop Art – famous for his paintings of the Campbell soup can, portraits of celebrities and his silver hair – was already portrayed by David Bowie in the biopic about Jean-Michel Basquiat, directed by Julian Schnabel in 1996. Yet, up until now, no movie had focused on the life of the American artist, which is strange considering Andy Warhol’s passion for cinema. During his career, he directed no less than two hundred films, including portraits of artists such as Lou Reed, Nico and Bob Dylan.
“Yes it’s true, I will be playing Andy Warhol in an upcoming film. And so grateful and excited about the opportunity. Happy belated birthday Andy. We miss you and your genius” the actor wrote on his Instagram page. In 2019, Jared Leto — who was awarded the Oscar for best supporting role in 2014 for his portrayal of an HIV positive transgender woman in Dallas Buyers Club – told Numéro about his desire to play tormented and tortured characters. It is, then, understandable that the actor is feeling ecstatic about portraying Andy Warhol, an artist who had a rough start in the industry before becoming “the most famous painter of the second half of the 20th century.”
Terrence Winter (The Sopranos, Vinyl, The Wolf of Wall Street) is said to write the film, which will follow the tracks of the biography written by Victor Bockris, Andy Warhol’s workshop “The Factory” and magazine Interview contributor.
A release date is still to be announced.
