A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a Game of Thrones spin-off
A true global phenomenon, the American series Game of Thrones (2011–2019) drew up to 19.3 million viewers for its finale on HBO, making it the most-watched program in the network’s history. Adapted from George R. R. Martin’s fantasy novels (1996), the show won over fifty-nine Emmy Awards – an all-time record.
As for its prequel, the series House of the Dragon (2022-), which chronicles the Targaryen civil war, it attracted nearly ten million viewers for the pilot episode alone, confirming the ongoing appeal for this dark universe.
A century before the bloody conflicts happening in Game of Thrones, Westeros was not yet torn apart by the power struggles that would later shape its fate. In Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the new six-episode HBO series available on January 18th, 2026, the kingdom remains under Targaryen ruling. Memories of the last dragons still linger. It is in this fragile, shifting world that an unexpected adventure begins. The tale of Ser Duncan the Tall, a guileless knight, and his young squire Egg…
A change of tone in the spin-off
Far from thrones, plots, and dragons, the series opts for a more intimate, almost pastoral tone. Inspired by George R. R. Martin’s novellas Tales of Dunk and Egg, it explores the human side of the legends. That of a knight without title or fortune, true to his ideals, and a child of royal blood unaware of his destiny. Together, they journey through a changing Westeros, inhabited by ambitious lords, resigned peasants, and unseen threats.
What truly sets A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms apart is its new register. The trailer makes it clear – humour has its place here. A rarity in this universe. Ser Duncan, portrayed by Peter Claffey (Bad Sisters), a simple and straightforward protagonist, embodies a kind of raw sincerity. Beneath that seemingly tale of knights, the spin-off promises to renew Westeros with a lighter spirit of companionship… Before the shadow of the Iron Throne returns.
Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere on HBO Max on January 18th, 2026.
