The White Lotus, a razor-sharp satirical hit
Since its debut in 2021, The White Lotus has established itself as a sharp social satire, dissecting the privileges and hypocrisies of vacationing elites. Each season, written and directed by Mike White, explores a new idyllic location and a cast of characters as fascinating as they are detestable. And Season 4 is already in the works.
The first season, set in Hawaii and featuring an unforgettable performance by Jennifer Coolidge, captivated audiences with its dark humor and social tension. It scored a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from the outset and went on to win multiple Emmy Awards.
Season two, in Sicily, deepened the themes of desire and power, while the third season, set in Thailand and aired in February 2025 on HBO, was praised for its visual richness and stellar performances. The cast included Walton Goggins, Aimee Lou Wood, Carrie Coon, Charlotte Le Bon, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and K-pop superstar Lisa from Blackpink.
New directions for season 4
HBO has confirmed a fourth season of The White Lotus, and Mike White is considering a departure from tropical beaches to explore new landscapes. Potential destinations include Japan, Mexico, Australia, or South Africa. A season set in the French Alps could also offer an intriguing change of scenery. Characters Greg (Jon Gries) and Belinda (Natasha Rothwell) are expected to return.
One notable change? The departure of composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer, whose distinctive score defined the tone of the early seasons. This shift may influence the show’s sonic atmosphere moving forward. Filming for Season 4 is expected to begin, at the earliest, in 2027.
