The cult film The Devil Wears Prada with Anne Hathaway will have a sequel

It’s hard to imagine a more iconic movie about fashion… Nearly two decades after the release of the memorable The Devil Wears Prada, a sequel is currently been shot in New York. While the US release is scheduled for May 1st, 2026, the French theatrical release date has also been set on April 29, 2026. The height of luxury? A first trailer featuring heels and all set to a hit song by Madonna, was released on November 12th, 2025. One thing’s for sure, it already has us counting the days till the release next year.

The original film’s producer, Wendy Finerman, is developing that sequel backed by Disney, while David Frankel, who directed the first film, is expected to direct the second one as well. Aline Brosh McKenna, the original screenwriter of The Devil Wears Prada, is working on the sequel too. A sign of a high-quality production…

Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt in the cast

But what excites us most is the comeback of the original actresses. Meryl Streep will once again portray Miranda Priestly, the uncompromising and ultra chic editor-in-chief of the fictional fashion magazine Runway. Emily Blunt will take back her role as Emily, the insufferable assistant to Meryl Streep’s character.

However, there was some uncertainty doubt about Anne Hathaway’s presence. Her busy schedule could have prevented the actress from stepping back into the now-iconic shoes of Andrea Sachs, the endearing heroine who had to navigate the cutthroat world of fashion. In previous interviews, Anne Hathaway said she was unsure whether or not she will be part of this sequel. Yet, the latest news confirmed that she will indeed be part of the cast, alongside the excellent Stanley Tucci.

Appearances from Lady Gaga and Sydney Sweeney

Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels), Justin Theroux (The Leftovers), B. J. Novak (The Office), Simone Ashley (Bridgerton) and Pauline Chalamet, Timothée Chalamet’s sister, also appear in the credits. Actor and director Kenneth Branagh will embody Miranda Priestly’s husband.

More surprises? Singer Lady Gaga and actress Sydney Sweeney could be making cameo appearances in the film, alongside numerous fashion figures, since the crew was spotted at the Fashion Week.

A plot focused on the tyrannical Miranda Priestly

In the original 2006 film, we met the shy, but irresistible Andrea as she landed in New York to become the assistant of the difficult editor-in-chief of a major fashion magazine. The new script is reportedly based on the novel Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns by Lauren Weisberger.

In this sequel adapted from a novel by Lauren Weisberger, the tyrannical Miranda Priestly is still at the head of Runway. But the magazine is now having financial troubles. Having lost some of her former prestige, she becomes envious of Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt), who now runs a thriving advertising company. The film will explore the challenges faced by print media, now competing with digital content and social media.

It is still unclear what Andrea Sachs’s role will be, but there’s great anticipation to see how the filmmakers will address all the changes that have taken place in the media and fashion industries. Starting with the major influence of Instagram and TikTok… So, we will have to be patient to find out more. In the meantime, many photos from the set have already leaked. And the looks seems to measure up to those chosen for the first film.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 by David Frankel, coming out in theatres on April 29th, 2026, in France and on May 1st, 2026, in the US.
