What project will bring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson together on screen?
After Jessica Chastain in the mediocre Mothers’ Instinct, Anne Hathaway is about to star alongside another prolific Hollywood actress. The Devil Wears Prada star will join Dakota Johnson in the psychological thriller Verity, an adaptation of the dark novel by bestselling author Colleen Hoover.

A psychological thriller with Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson
“I’ve had a few setbacks lately,” Anne Hathaway, 42, shared in the columns of Vanity Fair in 2024. A vague comment that might have referred to some of her latest lukewarm projects. Yet, the American actress seems determined to bounce back by lining up major roles. After her transformation into a forty-something gallery owner secretly dating a pop star in The Idea of You (2024), she has been taking on a series of increasingly promising features.
Among Christopher Nolan’s upcoming blockbuster, The Devil Wears Prada 2 and the dramedy Mother Mary, in which she stars alongside FKA twigs and Hunter Schafer, Anne Hathaway has also found time for another anticipated project. She will star in Verity, a film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name. Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett (Trap, Oppenheimer) will join the actress in this upcoming psychological thriller.
A feature film reminiscent of Gone Girl
Characterized as a psychological thriller echoing Gone Girl (2014), Verity follows the story of Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer who gets a golden opportunity. After a mysterious car accident, bestselling author Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) is unable to finish her latest book. Her husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) hires Lowen as a ghostwriter to complete her unfinished manuscript… But as Lowen gets closer to the writer, she begins to uncover Verity’s dark, disturbing past. Who really is that woman admired by all?
The film adaptation is directed by Michael Showalter, who previously worked with Anne Hathaway on The Idea of You. Nick Antosca (The Act, Channel Zero) will be in charge of the screenplay. A few official images have been released recently and stirred up excitement among fans.
In these images, Dakota Johnson is standing next to a bumper-smeared car, with blood all over her face and raincoat. As the shooting recently ended in New York, Veriry got a first-look preview during the latest edition of CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April 2026.
A controversy surrounding Verity?
Verity is expected to follow in the footsteps of It Ends With Us (2024), another film adaptation of one of Colleen Hoover‘s novels. While the critics didn’t receive the project well, it was a hit at the box office last year, grossing over $350 million.
However, the feature also sparked controversy. Its allegedly sanitized portrayal of domestic violence and the ongoing legal dispute between co-stars Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni keep fueling the media frenzy. Will Verity face a similar fate? The film is set for release on October 2nd, 2026, in US theaters and on September 30th, 2026, in French ones. Until then, an intriguing, sultry trailer has been unveiled.
