Digger, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s ambitious project
It is a safe bet that Digger will be one of this year’s defining features. Directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, the film stars American actor Tom Cruise. This psychological thriller will focus on a powerful man seeking redemption after causing a global catastrophe. Proving he can save humanity becomes his main goal.
Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the project gathers impressive actors… Alongside Tom Cruise are Jesse Plemons (Kinds of Kindness), who won Best Actor at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, German actress Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), John Goodman (The Big Lebowski), and Riz Ahmed (The Phoenician Scheme). Filming, which began in November 2024 in the UK, was briefly paused in March 2025 due to John Goodman’s minor injury. The film will come out in September 2026.
Will Tom Cruise leave action movies behind?
A four-time Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Alejandro González Iñárritu is known for films, such as Amores Perros (2000), Birdman (2014), and The Revenant (2015) starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Best known for his intricate narratives exploring the human condition, the filmmaker returns to English-speaking cinema with this new, mysterious endeavor, after his foray into Mexican cinema with Bardo (2022)…
At 63, Tom Cruise seems to be opening a new chapter in his career. After years portraying Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible, the actor appears to be stepping away from blockbusters to explore more introspective roles. A chance for him to showcase the full range of his acting talent in a more dramatic register. Something he had already shown in Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut (1999) and Neil Jordan’s Interview with the Vampire (1994).
