Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds on the bromance behind Deadpool & Wolverine

Actors Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman suit up once again in Marvel’s latest Deadpool & Wolverine, a film as irreverent as it is action-packed, released in theaters in July 2024 and streaming on Disney+ starting April 25, 2025. At a London press conference, the two stars spoke to us about their bromance.

  • Recent Marvel releases like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels struggled to win over audiences. But Deadpool & Wolverine, released in July 2024, turned the tide. Available on Disney+ from April 25, 2025, the Rated-R blockbuster was a box-office hit.

    Deadpool & Wolverine, irreverent heroes

With its ripped leads and razor-sharp humor, it managed to win back many fans of the superhero genre.

This cheeky film brings together two beloved anti-heroes: the disfigured, wisecracking mercenary Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, played with mischief by Canadian-American actor Ryan Reynolds, and the brooding, clawed Logan, aka Wolverine, embodied by the darkly charismatic Hugh Jackman.

In this third Deadpool installment, we follow the unhinged Wade Wilson, who, after failing to join the Avengers, is pulled into a dangerous mission. Found by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a multiverse watchdog agency, he must enlist Wolverine, resurrected after his death in 2017, to save his world and friends from annihilation.

While the film boasts a pulsating soundtrack (Reynolds personally asked Madonna to use Like a Prayer), bold and absurdly sexual humor, and epic fight scenes, its real power comes from the explosive and eventually harmonious chemistry between its two stars.

“Hugh and I joke a lot, but our real conversations are deep and emotional.”, Ryan Reynolds

This bond was evident during the Deadpool & Wolverine press conference in London, which Numéro attended in July 2024.

Each actor praised the other. Hugh Jackman joked that he was “broken” and doing theater when Disney called. “I really meant it when I said I was done with Wolverine. But in 2016, I saw the first 15 minutes of Deadpool and thought, oops—I probably should’ve watched that before making up my mind. I could immediately picture them together in a buddy movie setup.”

Jackman also hailed Reynolds’ comedic brilliance: “At Ryan’s place, there’s always a classic film playing, Buster Keaton or Charlie Chaplin. And when you watch Ryan perform, it all clicks. You think, ‘Ah, so that’s where the physical, slapstick comedy comes from.’ Maybe you’re a terrible father, Ryan, but at least you’re funny. And with enough therapy, your kids might forgive you.”

To which Ryan Reynolds quipped that his kids “will overcome their trauma thanks to daddy’s cinematic legacy. Everyone knows celebrity kids turn out great.”

“This film was born out of the love we have for each other.” – Ryan Reynolds

Reynolds, who had dreamed of this politically incorrect pairing for years, added, “Without sounding too esoteric, we really feel this movie was born out of the love we have for each other.”

“We’ve known each other for nearly two decades and been through a lot together. We joke a lot publicly, but most of our real conversations are intense and emotional,” said the actor, who is married to actress Blake Lively.

“The money spent on Hugh Jackman’s skincare routine alone would bankrupt you.” , Ryan Reynolds

For Reynolds, Hugh Jackman is “the best. Everything you hope he’d be and more. I’ve never met someone with that much integrity.” He recalls seeing Jackman on set in 2007 and thinking: “Here’s someone not just amazing but kind and grounded. He knew everyone’s name and understood the unity that should reign on a set. I remember thinking, if I ever get to be in his shoes, I hope I can be a tenth the man he is.”

Continuing in his usual sarcastic vein, the Deadpool (2016) actor added, “Now that I’m much taller than him, I’ve followed many of his lessons. I realized I’m too big to fail, so I crush my enemies and drink their blood.” He also joked, “The money spent on Hugh’s skincare routine alone would bankrupt you.”

A film that breaks the fourth wall

Director Shawn Levy (Free Guy, Real Steel) also emphasized the emotional core of Deadpool & Wolverine, a movie that isn’t afraid to break the fourth wall and talk directly to the audience.

“We always tried to stay true to what the audience loves about these characters by asking what felt honest for Logan and Wade. At the heart of Deadpool & Wolverine is friendship. Emotion is the most subversive element of all. Bring these two heroes, and these two actors together, and you get a film with real heart and magic.” As Ryan Reynolds put it, “This movie is unlike anything Marvel has done before.”
