The highly anticipated return of Joachim Trier
It’s safe to say that Joachim Trier has firmly established himself as a key figure in contemporary cinema. Notable works include Reprise (2006), Oslo, August 31st (2011), and Thelma (2017). His previous film, The Worst Person in the World (2021), which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay, also garnered Renate Reinsve the Best Actress Award at Cannes.
This year, Trier returns with Sentimental Values, reuniting with Reinsve, who plays Nora, an actress wholly dedicated to her career. Her younger sister, Agnes, has chosen a more settled life with a husband and child. After the death of their mother, the two sisters are forced to reconnect with their estranged father, Gustav—a once-renowned director portrayed by Stellan Skarsgård. During a retrospective of his work in France, Gustav meets a Hollywood actress, played by Elle Fanning, and offers her a role originally meant for Nora. The start of shooting in Norway becomes a chance for Gustav to mend broken family ties.
In the running for 2025 Cannes Film Festival
Sentimental Values is already generating considerable buzz among critics and audiences alike, who are hoping for the emotional depth and sensitivity that have become Trier’s hallmarks. Its inclusion in the official competition at Cannes signals the festival’s continued confidence in the Norwegian filmmaker’s ability to deliver a poignant and resonant work.
