The charismatic Dakota Johnson, 35, moves from project to project. She will soon appear in the thriller Verity, alongside Anne Hathaway, and the romcom Materialists by Celine Song (Past Lives). The American actress also attended the Cannes Film Festival this year. Indeed, she played in a feature film included in the Cannes Première selection. It was her very first time walking the red carpet at the French festival.

The star of Fifty Shades Freed (2018) and Persuasion (2022) proves once again that she’s not drawn to easy love stories… At least on screen. In Splitsville, directed by Michael Angelo Covino (The Climb), she embodies a young woman in an open relationship with Adria Arjona (Blink Twice).

An open marriage on screen in Splitsville
The premise? “When his wife Ashley asks for a divorce, Carey runs to his friends, Julie and Paul, for support. Their secret to happiness is an open marriage; that is, until Carey crosses the line and throws all of their relationships into chaos.”
Produced by the buzzy studio Neon – behind films by Sean Baker, David Cronenberg, and Bong Joon-ho – Splitsville is set to give us a rock’n’roll image of Dakota Johnson. More than the one she often projects on red carpets.
An actress who runs her own production company
During a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival in April 2025, Thierry Frémaux, the festival’s general delegate, stated: “You’ll recognize the name Michael Angelo Covino. His film The Climb, which began with a bicycle ascent in the south of France, was presented in the Un Certain Regard selection. He returns with the same kind of cinema, an adult romantic comedy.”
The film was developed with support from TeaTime, the production company founded by Dakota Johnson and her friend Ro Donnelly. During a talk hosted by Kering Women in Motion at the festival, the actress explained that six years ago, when she launched TeaTime, she wasn’t taken seriously as a producer. She also emphasized her focus on female-driven projects. We can’t wait to see where she goes next, both as an actress and a producer.
