At almost 90, Lee Ufan remains one of the most respected figures in contemporary art. Since the 1960s, the painter, sculptor, thinker, and philosopher has developed a minimalist language instantly recognizable. Simple elements are selected for their material presence – stones, steel plates, iron bars, mirrors, pigment-based paints – then associated with one another, with the space that welcome them and with the viewer looking at them.

That goes for a stone resting on a glass sheet or, as well as for his paintings, whose signature touch consists of a single tapered square executed with extreme focus and control in one move thanks to the width of his brushstroke. Numéro art first met with the artist in his Parisian studio, and then in the photo studio of another master, Paolo Roversi.
