Dior: Jonathan Anderson’s first womenswear looks at the Venice Film Festival

As he is about to unveil his first women’s collection for Dior in early October, Jonathan Anderson has turned the red carpet of the 2025 Venice Film Festival into his playground. Appointed creative director of the Dior Men, Women and Haute couture collections last April, the designer has been unveiling hints of his upcoming creations over the past few days… From the sumptuous blue gown worn by actress Alba Rohrwacher to Mia Goth’s satin sheath dress. Throwback to his perfectly orchestrated teaser.

From the legendary red carpet – where no fewer than five gowns by Jonathan Anderson for Dior were spotted – to the photocalls of this 2025 edition, the prestigious event offered a first glimpse of the Irish designer’s vision for Dior womenswear.

Each year around that time, Venice celebrates cinema for over ten days. This new edition stood out for the noticeable and very much discussed presence of Dior’s creations. The aura of the house shone over the festival, carried by the vision of its new artistic director. One that is infused with history, precision and a touch of mischief, which are the designer’s signature.

A first Dior haute couture gown spotted on Alba Rohrwacher

The haute couture gown worn by Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher at the premiere of Jay Kelly by Noah Baumbach dazzled the red carpet. It took more than 120 hours of work in Dior’s ateliers to craft this midnight-blue silk crepe, draped and pleated over the bodice. The design brings together know-how and excellence, but also a surprisingly contradictory balance between opulence and restraint.

Built on a crinoline that lends volume and grandeur, the gown nonetheless preserves a striking purity of line. Right down to its tiniest details, there is that utter discretion to it. For instance, the house’s initials are delicately affixed to a small ribbon tied at the neck. Who knows? Perhaps this masterful creation sets the tone for Dior’s next haute couture collection, which will be unveiled in January 2026 in Paris.

The actresses wearing Dior on the red carpet

Rebecca Marder, Monica Barbaro, and Alba Rohrwacher… Many actresses chose to wear Dior creations by Jonathan Anderson for the 82nd edition of the Venice Film Festival. Whether it was Mia Goth in a chocolate silk satin gown adorned with an oversized bow, or Greta Lee in a short, voluminous, sheer dress in green organza and black satin, these looks revealed a new Dior aesthetic. Freer and more modern.

For the latter, who stars in Kathryn Bigelow’s latest film, the designer also revisited the Bar suit and the New Look silhouette, dressing her in a black silk suit that offers a refined, contemporary reinterpretation of Monsieur Dior’s codes. Among fluid fabrics, masterful draping, pleating and elegance, it represents a promising preview that only heightens the fashion world’s anticipation for the next Dior womenswear show. We can’t wait for Paris Fashion Week at the beginning of October.
