Painter Jadé Fadojutimi, a colour genius

Her near-abstract compositions, with their rich range of fuchsias, indigos, purples, reds, greens, and yellows rendered with touching, expressionist brushstrokes, evoke something of the plant world. The large-format paintings by Londoner Jadé Fadojutimi bear the distinctive hallmark of oil pastel, with gestural touches that the artist adds to the “visual environments” she constructs using superimposed layers of oil and acrylic paint. Distinctive and arresting, they have already caught the attention of major galleries such as Gagosian, Gisela Capitain, and Taka Ishii. Curator Hervé Mikaeloff first became familiar with Fadojutimi’s work around five years ago in London. “Her unique creations immediately reminded me of musical scores,” he recalls. “Her use of color is reminiscent of some of the great masters, but in her own vibrant, emotionally- charged world.

An international success, from Gagosian to the Venice Biennale

As if to emphasize the key role music, fashion, and animation play in her approach, Fadojutimi incorporated a soundtrack into DWELVE: A Goosebump in Memory, her first Gagosian solo show in New York in 2024.

This sensory power is one of the reasons why Fadojutimi’s paintings have made their way around the world, with exhibitions at London’s Hayward Gallery (2021), the Kunstmuseum Bonn (2022), the 59th Venice Biennale (2022), and the National Art Museum in Osaka (2024), to cite just a few.

Jadé Fadojutimi is represented by the Gagosian, Gisela Capitain and Taka Ishii galleries. Some of the artist’s artworks are exhibited by the Gagosian (Stand B15) and Gisela Capitain (Stand R8) galleries at the Art Basel fair, from June 17th to 22nd, 2025, Messe Basel, Basel.
