Why Sydney Sweeney will be the perfect Barbarella in the remake of the cult film

C’est un objet cinématographique non identifié à l’esthétique kitschissime, collision improbable entre l’univers de la science-fiction et l’atmosphère de libération sexuelle de la fin des années 60. Des décennies plus tard, le film culte Barbarella (1968) réalisé par le Français Roger Vadim, continue de fasciner. Si les effets spéciaux paraissent aujourd’hui quelque peu datés, le charisme et la sensualité de l’héroïne Barbarella, incarnée par la sublime Jane Fonda, demeurent intemporels. Preuve de sa pérennité, le long-métrage va faire l’objet d’un remake qui devrait, selon Deadline, être réalisé par Edgar Wright (Baby Driver, Last Night in Soho).

On sait déjà, par contre, que c’est Sydney Sweeney, l’une des héroïnes d’Euphoria (2019), qui a été choisie par le studio Sony pour incarner l’héroïne en mission spatiale pour sauver le monde des griffes du terrible scientifique Durand Durand. L’actrice sera également la productrice exécutive avec sa société de production Fifty-Fifty Films.

Pour annoncer cette nouvelle, l’artiste a posté sur son compte Instagram une planche de la BD érotique de Jean-Claude Forest parue en 1962 qui a inspiré le film. On y voit l’héroïne en armure de guerrière spatiale et bottes de métal, brandissant une arme dans une atmosphère cosmique. En commentaire, Sydney Sweeney a posté la mention “Time to save the universe”, confirmant qu’elle incarnera bien la célèbre combattante de l’espace qui vit en l’an 40 000 sur une autre planète.

La jeune actrice Sydney Sweeney tout juste âgée de 26 ans a déjà prouvé son talent dans un riche éventail de rôles dans des séries. Dans La servante écarlate (2018), elle apparaît bouleversante dans le rôle d’Eden, jeune vierge dévouée mariée au Commander Nick et qui souhaite par-dessus tout répondre à son devoir d’enfanter. Mais c’est  surtout son rôle de Cassie dans Euphoria (2019) qui l’a révélée au grand public.

Elle y joue avec une justesse troublante le rôle de l’adolescente réservée au besoin irrépressible d’être aimée, qui dans la première saison, est victime de slutshaming, et qui progressivement, s’émancipe en assumant sa sexualité et son corps. Sydney Sweeney a aussi été à l’affiche, aux côtés de Dakota Johnson, du spin-off de la saga Spider-Man intitulé Madame Web (2024), de la comédie romantique Tout sauf toi (2024) et du film d’horreur Immaculée. La star jouera également une boxeuse professionnelle dans un long-métrage présenté comme un Rocky au féminin. Autant d’aventures variées démontrant sa versatilité. 

Magnétique à l’écran, l’actrice aux allures de baby-doll semble être un choix parfait pour marcher sur les pas de Jane Fonda et incarner l’érotique Barbarella. Un personnage subversif qui déjà dans les années 70, avait fait scandale. Dans la scène d’ouverture notamment – demeurée mythique – les courbes de l’hypnotique Jane Fonda, entièrement nue, se dévoilaient progressivement alors qu’elle était en suspension dans le cockpit de son vaisseau spatial, en apesanteur. Une sensualité explosive qui va marquer durablement les esprits.

Barbarella, un film culte avec Jane Fonda

Au-delà des nombreuses scènes devenues cultes, comme celle où Jane Fonda se retrouve prisonnière de l’Orgasmotron, machine censée tuer l’héroïne en lui procurant un plaisir orgasmique, les costumes flamboyants ont forgé la renommée du film. Les armures sensuelles, body transparents ou côtes de mailles dévoilant les courbes ont été imaginés par le créateur Paco Rabanne. Cette succession de looks futuristes, mini-jupes et bottes métalliques, s’inscrivant dans la tendance Space Age des années 60, ont inspiré grandement la mode. 

Encore aujourd’hui, les créateurs puisent dans les costumes du film, comme en témoigne ce body aux moulage transparent aperçu chez Loewe pour sa collection printemps-été 2023, ou encore les silhouettes Space Age pensées par Nicolas Ghesquière pour la collection Louis Vuitton printemps-été 2023. Barbarella a aussi inspiré la pop culture, de Katy Perry vêtue comme l’héroïne des années 60 dans le clip d’E.T. (2011) à Ariana Grande modernisant le mythe en 2019 dans la campagne de sa marque de beauté r.e.m. beauty. Le groupe pop des années 80 Duran Duran a également tiré son nom du film et intitulé l’un des morceaux Electric Barbarella (1997). Le remake du long-métrage devrait de nouveau faire des émules et peut-être relancer la tendance Space Age sur TikTok.

Proof of its timelessness, a remake of the film will be made, but the name of the director remains unknown for now.

What we know for sure is that Sydney Sweeney, one of the protagonists in Euphoria (2019), has been chosen by Sony Pictures Studios to embody the heroine on a space mission to save the world from the clutches of the terrible scientist Durand Durand. The actress will also serve as executive producer with her production company Fifty-Fifty Films. To announce the good news, the artist posted on her Instagram account a plate of the 1962 erotic comic book by Jean-Claude Forest that inspired the film. It shows the heroine wearing a space warrior armor with metal boots and raising a weapon in a cosmic atmosphere. Sydney Sweeney wrote “Time to save the universe” as a caption, thus confirming that she will indeed play the famous space fighter who lives in the year 40,000 on another planet.

Despite her young age, the 25-year-old actress has already proven her talent in a rich array of roles in different series. In The Handmade’s Tale (2018), she is heartbreaking as Eden, a devoted young virgin married to Commander Nick and who, above all else, wants to fulfil her duty to bear children. Yet, it is her role as Cassie in Euphoria (2019) that revealed her to the world. She plays with a disturbing accuracy the role of the shy teenager with an irrepressible need to be loved, who is also a victim of slut-shaming in the first season, but who gradually emancipates herself by taking control of her sexuality and her body. Sydney Sweeney also stars alongside Dakota Johnson in the Spider-Man spin-off Madame Web, which will come out in 2024. Magnetic on screen, the baby-faced actress seems to be a perfect choice to follow in the footsteps of Jane Fonda and play the erotic Barbarella. The subversive character had already caused a scandal in the 1970s. In the mythical opening scene, the curves of the hypnotic and naked Jane Fonda were progressively revealed as she was floating in the cockpit of her weightless spaceship. An explosive sensuality that will leave a lasting impression.

Barbarella, a cult reference

Beyond the numerous scenes that have become cult, such as the one where Jane Fonda finds herself trapped in the Orgasmotron, a machine that is supposed to kill the heroine by giving her orgasmic pleasure, the flamboyant costumes have forged the film’s reputation. The sensual armors, transparent bodysuits, and skin- tight chain mails were designed by Paco Rabanne. This series of futuristic looks, mini-skirts, and metallic boots, keeping up with the Space Age trend of the 1960s, greatly inspired the fashion sphere. Even today, designers draw their inspiration from the costumes of the film, such as this body with transparent moldings spotted in Loewe’s Spring-Summer 2023 collection, or the Space Age silhouettes designed by Nicolas Ghesquière for the Louis Vuitton Spring-Summer 2023 collection. Barbarella has also inspired pop culture, from Katy Perry dressing as the 1960s heroine in the video of E.T. (2011) to Ariana Grande modernizing the myth in the 2019 campaign for her beauty brand r.e.m. beauty. The 1980s pop band Duran Duran also pick their name after the film and titled one of the songs Electric Barbarella (1997). The remake of the feature is expected to be another hit, and perhaps reignite the Space Age trend on TikTok.
