15 films to look forward to in 2023

1. “Babylon” de Damien Chazelle, avec Margot Robbie et Brad Pitt

 

Très attendu, Babylon, le nouveau film du cinéaste américano-français oscarisé Damien Chazelle (La la Land, Whiplash) vaut le détour pour de multiples raisons. D’abord, pour son casting impressionnant, qui réunit pour la seconde fois Brad Pitt et Margot Robbie (ils ont tourné ensemble dans Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood de Quentin Tarantino en 2019), mais aussi pour son histoire, qui nous plonge – une fois de plus – dans les débuts d’Hollywood,  dans les années 20. Entre fêtes débridées et tournages houleux, on suit dans ce film épique et fascinant, plusieurs personnages attachants aux destins palpitants.

13. “The Nightingale” de Mélanie Laurent, avec Dakota et Elle Fanning

 

L’année 2023 s’annonce remplie pour la Française Mélanie Laurent qui s’apprêter à dévoiler non pas un mais deux films qu’elle a réalisé. Si le premier, La Grande Odalisque (avec Adèle Exarchopoulos et Manon Bresch) sortira sur Netflix, le second se destine aux salles obscures. En discussion depuis 2020, le projet intitulé The Nightingale s’inspire du roman de Kristin Hannah, Le chant du rossignol (2015), qui relate le quotidien de deux sœurs en France à la veille de la Seconde Guerre mondiale : l’une doit accueillir un officier allemand pendant que son mari est au front, l’autre rejoint Paris pour s’engager dans la Résistance. L’actrice et réalisatrice, qui a obtenu le César du meilleur film documentaire pour Demain en 2016, a fait appel aux actrices  Elle et Dakota Fanning pour incarner les rôles principaux de son nouveau long-métrage. Un fait rare puisque les deux soeurs ne sont apparus qu’une seule fois ensemble dans le film Sam, je suis Sam de Jessie Nelson en 2001.

2. “The Fabelmans” de Steven Spielberg, avec Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams, Paul Dano

 

Après s’être attaqué au genre de la comédie musicale avec son remake de West Side Story (2021), Steven Spielberg s’inspire de sa propre vie pour The Fabelmans. Le projet prend sa source dans la jeunesse du réalisateur, en Arizona, et raconte l’histoire de sa famille ainsi que la naissance de sa vocation de cinéaste. Côté casting, aux côtés du réalisateur David Lynch, on trouvera d’autres noms séduisants tels que Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Paul Dano, Julia Butters (Once Upon A Time…in Hollywood) ou encore Gabriel LaBelle (The Predator, American Gigolo). Un biopic romancé intime qui dévoilera peut-être les secrets du réalisateur en activité depuis 63 ans.

3. « Crazy Bear” d’Elizabeth Banks avec Keri Russell et Ray Liotta

 

Loin de prétendre à l’Oscar du meilleur film, le nouveau long-métrage de la réalisatrice américaine Elizabeth Banks (apparue dans les Spiderman de Sam Raimi et 40 ans, toujours puceau) est en lice pour le trophée du film le plus improbable de 2023. Œuvre jubilatoire et barrée pour les uns, film idiot qui ne mérite pas son financement pour les autres, Crazy Bear a le mérite de faire parler avant sa sortie en mars 2023. Le pitch ? L’histoire vraie d’un ours gigantesque devenu littéralement fou après avoir ingéré de la cocaïne et qui prend en chasse un groupe de policiers, de criminels, de touristes et d’adolescents dans une forêt de l’état de Géorgie, aux États-Unis en 1985… Au casting : Keri Russell (The Americans) et l’acteur Ray Liotta – star des Affranchis de Martin Scorsese – disparu tragiquement en mai 2022 à l’âge de 68 ans.

4. « The Whale” de Darren Aronofsky, avec Brendan Fraser, Sadie Sink

 

Le cinéaste américain Darren Aronofsky (à qui l’on doit notamment le clivant Mother! avec Jennifer Lawrence et Javier Bardem mais aussi Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler et Black Swan), présentera en France son huitième long-métrage The Whale (“La Baleine”) le 8 mars prochain acclamé à la 79e Mostra de Venise en septembre dernier. Ce film met en scène Charlie, un ancien professeur d’anglais isolé dans l’Idaho et immobilisé par son obésité due à une hyperphagie maladive. Dans le rôle de ce quinquagénaire pesant 270 kilos qui veut se rapprocher de sa fille – jouée par la jeune actrice Sadie Sink, vue dans Stranger Things -, l’acteur américano-canadien Brendan Fraser serait des plus bouleversants.

5. “Les Trois Mousquetaires: D’Artagnan” de Martin Bourboulon avec François Civil, Pio Marmaï et Vincent Cassel

 

C’est le prochain blockbuster français : Les Trois Mousquetaires : D’Artagnan réalisé par Martin Bourboulon (à l’origine d’Eiffel avec Emma Mackey) mise autant sur son casting que sur ses décors pour séduire le public. Un pari de taille puisqu’avant même sa première sortie, deux autres films sont déjà prévus, dont le second pour la fin de l’année 2023. Pour les rôles des célèbres fantassins armés, le réalisateur a choisi parmi les acteurs français les plus plébiscités de ces dernières années —  Vincent Cassel pour Athos, François Civil dans le rôle de d’Artagnan, Pio Marmaï dans celui de Porthos et Romain Duris pour Aramis. Pour compléter cette équipe déjà impressionnante, on retrouve aussi la fascinante Eva Green qui incarne la vénéneuse Milady et Louis Garrel pour incarner le roi Louis XIII. Avec un budget de 72 millions d’euros et près de 27 semaines de production, le tournage des deux premiers films de la trilogie de Martin Bourbolon entendent revisiter l’histoire du fameux roman d’Alexandre Dumas – publié en 1844 – avec un ton que celui-ci décrit à mi-chemin entre le thriller et le western royal.

7. “La Petite Sirène” de Rob Marshall avec Halle Bailey et Jonah Hauer-King

 

 

Après les très réussis Le Roi Lion (2019) et La Belle et la Bête (2017) et les plus discutables Aladdin (2019) et Mulan (2020), c’est le dessin animé La Petite Sirène, réinterprétation libre du conte d’Hans Christian Andersen, qui s’offre remake en live-action. Derrière la caméra de cette nouvelle production Disney, Rob Marshall, réalisateur et chorégraphe spécialiste de la comédie musicale – on luit doit Chigaco (2002) et Nine (2009) -, tandis que pour le rôle de la sirène Ariel, la chanteuse afro-américaine Halle Bailey. Un choix qui a provoqué de nombreux commentaires racistes sur les réseaux sociaux mais également une impressionnante vague de soutien, exaltée lors de la diffusion de la bande-annonce du film, face aux réactions de petites filles pouvant désormais s’identifier au personnage blanc dans le dessin d’animé d’origine. Au côtés de l’actrice débutante, le jeune acteur britannique Jonah Hauer-King (aperçu dans la série de la BBC World on Fire, 2020) dans le rôle du prince Eric, mais aussi l’acteur espagnol oscarisé Javier Bardem dans celui du roi Triton et l’actrice américaine Melissa McCarthy dans celui d’Ursula, la sorcière des mers. Un casting qui compte également Simone Ashley (Sex Education, La Chronique des Bridgerton), Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8 et Shang-Chi et la Légende des Dix Anneaux) et le jeune acteur Jacob Tremblay (Room).

8. « Barbie » de Greta Gerwig avec Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling et Emma Mackey

 

Décidément, la tendance des films en live-action a le vent en poupe. Faisant concurrence à Disney, Warner Bros transforme la célèbre poupée Barbie en héroïne en chair et en os. Réalisée par Greta Gerwig, (Lady Bird, Les filles du Docteur March) et scénariste par Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha), le film de la toute première adaptation sur grand écran du personnage de Barbie, promet d’être féministe et décalé, sur fond de quête initiatique et recherche du bonheur. Et dans le rôle de Barbie, l’actrice Margot Robbie, également à l’affiche du prochain film de Damien Chazelle Babylon prévu pour janvier 2023. À ses côtés, un casting prestigieux avec Ryan Gosling en Ken aux abdos et caleçons apparents sous une veste en jean sans manches, l’hilarant Will Ferrell (Frangins malgré eux, Elfe), Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Eiffel), l’actrice transgenre Hari Nef (The Idol), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Kate McKinnon (Scandale) ou encore Issa Rae (Insecure). Un film très attendu qui va certainement rester dans les annales du cinéma.

9. “Oppenheimer” de Christopher Nolan, avec Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt et Florence Pugh

 

Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), Tenet (2020)… Chaque sortie de film de Christopher Nolan est un évènement. Et à raison : des castings étoilés aux effets spéciaux renversants en passant par des scénarios époustouflants, le réalisateur captive son public année après année. Et il entend bien continuer avec son prochain film Oppenheimer, dont la sortie est prévue pour le 19 juillet 2023. Avec un budget de production qui s’élève à 100 millions de dollars, le long-métrage offre à la star de la série Peaky Blinders Cillian Murphy, un rôle à la mesure de son talent, épaulé par l’actrice Britannique Emily Blunt (Le Retour de Marry Poppins), la très acclamée Florence Pugh (vue récemment aux côtés du chanteur Harry Styles dans Don’t Worry Darling) ou encore Robert Downey Jr (connu pour ses rôles dans Iron Man et Sherlock Holmes). Adapté de la biographie American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005) écrite par Kai Bird et Martin J. Sherwin, le film raconte la vie de Julius Robert Oppenheimer, physicien théoricien américain et professeur de physique né en 1904, devenu chef du laboratoire de Los Alamos pendant la Seconde Guerre Mondiale et surnommé le “père de la bombe atomique”. Un exploit scientifique aux conséquences tragiques…

10. “Dune : deuxième partie” de Denis Villeneuve avec Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler et Florence Pugh

 

 

Véritable succès critique et commercial, le film Dune : première partie, du réalisateur canadien Denis Villeneuve, récompensé par six Oscars et cinq Baftas – rejoint immédiatement Star Wars, Star Trek ou Alien au panthéon des grandes fresques de la science-fiction. Il faut dire que cette seconde adaptation du roman Dune de Frank Herbert (1965) – après celle ratée de David Lynch – redonne au space opera ses lettres de noblesse entre budget pharaonique (165 millions de dollars) décors et costumes spectaculaires, un scénario shakespearien et surtout un casting d’exception – Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem – porté par les prodiges du cinéma américain : Timothée Chalamet et Zendaya. Prévu pour fin 2023, Dune : deuxième partie s’annonce tout aussi épique entre aventures spatiales, nouvelles alliances et désir de vengeance et un casting enrichi d’acteurs de renom : Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, Austin Butler, et Souheila Yacoub. Vivement l’année prochaine.

11. « Wonka” de Paul King, avec Timothée Chalamet, Rowan Atkinson et Olivia Coleman

 

 

Décidemment, Timothée Chalamet est sur tous les fronts. Après avoir endossé le rôle principal du blockbuster Dune(2021) de Denis Villeneuve et incarné un jeune cannibal dans le dernier projet de Luca Guadagnino, Bones and all(2022), l’acteur franco-américain se voit confier le joyeux rôle de Willy Wonka, le célèbre chocolatier. Intitulé Wonka, ce préquel de Charlie et la Chocolaterie (2005) — avec des séquences de comédie musicale — revient sur l’enfance et la jeunesse du chocolatier loufoque et burlesque imaginé par Roald Dahl en 1964. Avec une sortie dans les salles de cinéma françaises prévue pour le 13 décembre 2023, le très attendu long-métrage du réalisateur britannique Paul King réunira un casting britannique éclectique aux côtés de la coqueluche d’Hollywood. On retrouve notamment Rowan Atkinson (Mr Bean), Jim Carter (Downtown Abbey), Hugh Grant (Coup de foudre à Notting Hill), Keegan-Michael Key (How I Met Your Mother), Sally Hawkins (Paddington) et Olivia Colman (The Crown, The Lost Daughter).

12. “Napoleon” de Ridley Scott avec Joaquin Phoenix et Vanessa Kirby

 

Après House of Gucci (2021) avec Lady Gaga, le réalisateur Ridley Scott s’attaque à un pan de l’histoire de France. Passionné par le personnage historique de Napoléon Bonaparte, le Britannique revient, avec l’acteur américain Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) dans le rôle principal, sur les origines et l’ascension de l’empereur de France, vu à travers le prisme de la relation avec sa femme Joséphine. Avec la présence de la Britannique Vanessa Kirby, qui incarne Joséphine de Beauharnais, et de l’acteur franco-algérien Tahar Rahim qui joue le rôle de Paul Barras, un proche conseiller de l’empereur, cette nouvelle production Apple TV+ s’annonce grandiose au vu des images dévoilées dans une première bande-annonce.

14. “Bernstein” de Bradley Cooper, avec Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan et Jeremy Strong

 

La photographie de tournage a fait le tour de la Toile. On y voit un Bradley Cooper méconnaissable qui emprunte les traits du pianiste américain Léonard Bernstein (1918-1990) compositeur de la partition de la comédie musicale légendaire West Side Story (1961) et directeur de l’Orchestre philharmonique de New York de 1958 à 1969. Si Steven Spielberg était à l’origine pressenti pour réaliser ce biopic, c’est finalement Bradley Cooper qui s’installe derrière la caméra pour tourner ce long-métrage produit par la plateforme Netflix, cinq ans après son premier film, A Star is Born avec la chanteuse Lady Gaga, sacré à la fois aux Oscars et aux Grammy Awards. Intitulé Maestro ou Bernstein le film s’intéresse au couple que le musicien a formé avec Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan) mère de ses trois enfants, avant qu’il ne révèle son homosexualité. Il retrouvera finalement les bras de sa femme à la fin des années 70 alors qu’elle affronte un cancer. Aucune date de sortie n’a été annoncée pour le moment. Nul ne sait si le film de Bradley Cooper sera une exclusivité Netflix ou s’il sortira au cinéma.

15. “The Killer” de David Fincher, avec Michael Fassbender et Tilda Swinton

 

En 2007, David Fincher déclarait vouloir adapter la série de bandes dessinées française Le Tueur écrite par Matz et dessinée par Luc Jacamon, il y a plus de vingt ans. Quinze ans plus tard, l’histoire du solitaire tueur à gages qui élimine ses victimes sans scrupules ni remords va voir le jour sur Netflix. Bien que ce long-métrage soit uniquement à destination de la plateforme de streaming, la production s’annonce considérable, en témoigne les nombreux lieux de tournage. En effet, après un passage par le cinquième arrondissement de Paris en novembre 2021, les prises de vues ont ensuite été réalisées à La Nouvelle-Orléans, en République dominicaine, pour finalement s’arrêter à Saint-Charles dans l’Illinois. Pour ce qui est du casting, cette adaptation réunira Michael Fassbender (X-Men, Assasin’s Creed, Alien), Tilda Swinton (Memoria, The French Dispatch, Okja), Chris Parnell (Friends)…

5. “Empire Of Light” de Sam Mendes avec Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward et Colin Firth

 

Le cinéaste britannique Sam Mendes n’a pas donné signe de vie au monde du cinéma depuis 2020, année de son sacre aux Oscars (Meilleur réalisateur et Meilleur scénario original) pour son chef-d’œuvre en plan séquence 1917. Deux ans plus tard, le réalisateur de James Bond (Skyfall, Spectre) convie Olivia Colman, Micheal Ward et Colin Firth dans son nouveau projet, Empire of Light, une histoire d’amour dans les années 80 au sein d’un vieux cinéma de la côte sud de l’Angleterre. Présenté en avant-première au festival international du film de Toronto au mois de septembre 2022, ce film qui s’accompagne d’une BO signée Trent Reznor et Atticus Ross s’inscrit dans la continuité d’American Beauty (1999) et Les Noces Rebelles (2008), des drames aux succès retentissants

3. “Cocaine Bear” by Elizabeth Banks, starring Keri Russell and Ray Liotta

 

Far from being a contender for the Best Picture Oscar, the new feature by American director Elizabeth Banks, who appeared in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man and in The 40- Year-Old Virgin, is in competition for the award of the most far-fetch picture of 2023. Considered as a jubilant and crazy cinematic work by some people, or as a silly film that doesn’t deserve its funding by others, Cocaine Bear has the merit of getting itself talked about long before its release in March 2023. The plot? The true story of a gigantic bear that literally went crazy after ingesting cocaine and who now chases a group of policemen, criminals, tourists, and teenagers in a forest in Georgia, United States, in 1985… The cast includes Keri Russell (The Americans) and Ray Liotta, the star of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas who tragically died in May 2022 at the age of 68.

The film features Charlie, a morbidly obese former English teacher isolated somewhere in Idaho and immobilized due to his hyperphagia. American Canadian actor Brendan Fraser will move us as this 50- year-old man weighing 595 lbs who wants to get closer to his daughter, played by the young actress Sadie Sink (Stranger Things).

5. “Empire Of Light” by Sam Mendes, starring Olivia Colman, Michael Ward and Colin Firth

 

British filmmaker Sam Mendes has been moving under the radar since he won the Oscars for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay in 2020 for his masterpiece 1917. Two years later, the director of James Bond (Skyfall, Spectre) invites Olivia Colman, Michael Ward, and Colin Firth on his new project, Empire of Light, a love story set in an old cinema on the south coast of England in the 1980s. It also features a soundtrack created by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2022 and follows in the footsteps of the highly successful dramas American Beauty (1999) and Revolutionary Roads (2008).

5. “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan” by Martin Bourboulon, starring François Civil, Pio Marmaï and Vincent Cassel

 

The next French blockbuster is coming out soon. The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan directed by Martin Bourboulon, who also directed Eiffel starring Emma Mackey, is leaning both on its cast and scenery to seduce its audience. A big gamble since two other films are already coming out before its release – the second one will be in theaters by the end of 2023. The director has opted for some of the most popular French actors in recent years to play the famous foot soldiers, with Vincent Cassel as Athos, François Civil as d’Artagnan, Pio Marmaï as Porthos, and Romain Duris as Aramis. To complete this already impressive cast, the fascinating Eva Green will play the role of the poisonous Milady and Louis Garrel will interpret King Louis XIII. Rounding a budget of €72 million and over 27 weeks of production, the first two films of Martin Bourboulon’s trilogy aim at revamping Alexandre Dumas’ famous 1844 novel in a tone halfway between a thriller and a royal western, according to the director.

7. “The Little Mermaid” by Rob Marshall, starring Halle Bailey and Jonah Hauer-King

 

After the very successful The Lion King (2019) and Beauty and the Beast (2017), and the more questionable Aladdin (2019) and Mulan (2020), it is now the turn of The Little Mermaid, the free interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen’s tale, to be a live- action remake. Behind the camera of this new Disney production, director and choreographer Rob Marshall, who already specializes in musicals with Chigaco (2002) and Nine (2009). As for the role of Ariel, the African American singer Halle Bailey will embody the mermaid. That choice provoked numerous racist comments on social media, but also an impressive wave of support when the trailer was released in the face of reactions from little girls who could now identify with the original white character from the cartoon. Alongside the novice actress, the young British actor Jonah Hauer-King (seen in the 2020 BBC series World on Fire) will play Prince Eric, Oscar- winning Spanish actor Javier Bardem will interpret King Triton, while American actress Melissa McCarthy will embody Ursula, the Sea Witch. The cast also includes Simone Ashley (Sex Education, Bridgerton), Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, Ocean’s 8 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), and young actor Jacob Tremblay (Room).

The live-action trend is definitely catching on. In competition with Disney, Warner Bros studios are turning the famous Barbie doll into a heroine in the flesh. Directed by Greta Gerwig, (Lady Bird, Little Women) and written by Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, Frances Ha), the very first adaptation on the silver screen of Barbie promises to be a feminist and offbeat initiation story and pursuit of happiness. The role of Barbie is played by actress Margot Robbie, who also stars in Damien Chazelle’s upcoming film Babylon due in January 2023. The prestigious cast also including Ryan Gosling as Ken, with his abs and pants visible under his sleeveless denim jacket, the hilarious Will Ferrell (Step Brothers, Elf), Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Eiffel), transgender actress Hari Nef (The Idol), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Kate McKinnon (Scandal) and Issa Rae (Insecure). 9. “Oppenheimer” by Christopher Nolan, starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, and Florence Pugh

 

Inception (2010), Interstellar (2014), Tenet (2020) … Each one of Christopher Nolan film’s release is an event. Indeed, among star-studded casts, stunning special effects, and mind-blowing storylines, the director keeps captivating his audiences year after year. And he intends to do so with his upcoming film Oppenheimer, which will be released on July 19th, 2023. With a budget of $100 million, the film features Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy in a role worthy of his talent, alongside British actress Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), the acclaimed actress Florence Pugh (recently seen in Don’t Worry Darling with singer Harry Styles), and Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man, Sherlock Holmes). 10. “Dune: Part II” by Denis Villeneuve, starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, and Florence Pugh

 

 

Awarded six Oscars and five Baftas, Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s film Dune: Part One has been a great critical and commercial success. The feature joins Star Wars, Star Trek, and Alien in the hall of fame of the greatest science fiction films. Truth be told, after David Lynch’s failed adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel Dune (1965), this second version restores space opera genre to its rightful place, with a pharaonic budget of $165 million, a spectacular scenery and costumes, a Shakespearean script and, above all, an exceptional cast including Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Momoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, led by the American cinema prodigies Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. Coming out late 2023, Dune: Part II promises to be as epic as the first opus, with space adventures, new alliances, a desire for revenge, and additional renowned actors including Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, Austin Butler, and Souheila Yacoub. 11. “Wonka” by Paul King, starring Timothée Chalamet, Rowan Atkinson, and Olivia Coleman

 

Timothée Chalamet is everywhere. After taking on the lead role in Denis Villeneuve’s blockbuster Dune (2021) and embodying a young cannibal in Luca Guadagnino’s latest project Bones and All (2022), the Franco-American actor has been offered the jolly role of Willy Wonka, the famous chocolate maker. Entitled Wonka, this prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) with its musical sequences, revisits the childhood and young years of the zany and burlesque chocolate maker created by Roald Dahl in 1964. Due for release in France on December 13th, 2023, the eagerly awaited film by British director Paul King will feature an eclectic British cast playing alongside the Hollywood idol. The cast includes Rowan Atkinson (Mr . Bean), Jim Carter (Downtown Abbey), Hugh Grant (Notting Hill), Keegan-Michael Key (How I Met Your Mother), Sally Hawkins (Paddington) and Olivia Colman (The Crown, The Lost Daughter).

12. “Napoleon” by Ridley Scott, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby

 

After House of Gucci (2021) starring Lady Gaga, director Ridley Scott now tackles an important part of the history of France. Fascinated by the historical figure of Napoleon Bonaparte, the British director traces back to the origins and rise of the French emperor, seen through the lens of his relationship with his wife Joséphine. The film features American actor Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) as the lead character, British actress Vanessa Kirby as Josephine de Beauharnais, and French-Algerian actor Tahar Rahim as Paul Barras, a close advisor to the emperor. This new Apple TV+ production promises to be a great project judging by the first images unveiled in the trailer.

13. “The Nightingale” by Mélanie Laurent, starring Dakota and Elle Fanning

 

The year 2023 will be a busy one for the French actress Mélanie Laurent, who is about to unveil two films she has directed. While the first one, La Grande Odalisque starring Adèle Exarchopoulos and Manon Bresch, will be released on Netflix, the second one will be released on the silver screen. In conversation since 2020, the project entitled The Nightingale is based on Kristin Hannah’s novel The Nightingale (2015), which recounts the life of two sisters in France just before the World War II – one sister has to take in a German officer while her husband is at war, and the other moves to Paris to join the Resistance. The French actress and director, who won a César for Best Documentary Film for Demain in 2016, has invited Elle and Dakota Fanning to play the main roles in her new feature film. A rare occurrence as the two sisters have only appeared together once in Jessie Nelson’s 2001 film I Am Sam.

14. “Maestro” by Bradley Cooper, starring Bradley Cooper, Carey Mulligan, and Jeremy Strong

 

The photograph from the set has been shared everywhere on social media. It shows Bradley Cooper beyond recognition as Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), the American pianist and composer of the score of the legendary musical West Side Story (1961) who was also the director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1958 to 1969. Although Steven Spielberg was originally approached to direct this biopic, Bradley Cooper was eventually the one chosen to shoot this feature produced by Netflix, five years after A Star is Born, his first film starring singer Lady Gaga, which won both an Oscar and a Grammy award. Entitled Maestro, the film focuses on the musician’s relationship with Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan), the mother of his three children, before his coming out. He eventually went back with his wife in the late 1970s as she was fighting against cancer. No release date has been announced yet and no one knows if the film will be a Netflix exclusive or released in theaters.

15. “The Killer” by David Fincher, starring Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton

 

In 2007, David Fincher said he wanted to do an adaptation of the French comic book series The Killer written by Matz and drawn by Luc Jacamon more than twenty years ago. Fifteen years later, the story of the lonely hitman who kills his victims without scruples or remorse is about to be released on Netflix. Although this feature film is only intended for the streaming platform, the production promises to be great judging by the numerous filming locations – from the fifth arrondissement of Paris in November 2021 to New Orleans, the Dominican Republic and Saint-Charles, Illinois. As for the cast, this adaptation will reunite Michael Fassbender (X-Men, Assassin’s Creed, Alien), Tilda Swinton (Memoria, The French Dispatch, Okja), and Chris Parnell (Friends), among others.
