La Steven Kasher Gallery expose les clichés pop et psychédéliques du photographe américain Jimmy DeSana jusqu’au 18 février. L’occasion de (re)découvrir une œuvre photographique brillante et injustement méconnue en Europe.

Né à Detroit en 1950, Jimmy DeSana est l’une des figures de proue sur d’une génération d’artistes et photographes ayant régné sur la scène punk new-yorkaise des années 70-80. Avec à ses côtés les brillantes Nan Goldin, Cindy Sherman ou encore Laurie Simmons, le jeune Américain a imposé une esthétique singulière teintée de surréalisme, enrichie depuis ses premières expérimentations adolescentes. 

 

Frappé d’ennui dans la banlieue pavillonnaire où il vit avec ses parents, il a tout juste 16 ans lorsqu’il commence à photographier ses amis et connaissances dans le plus simple appareil, prenant des poses sexy et provocantes dans les jardins verdoyants de ses voisins. Inutile de dire que, jusqu’à ses 23 ans, DeSana dénote dans cet environnement paisible et passablement aseptisé, un décalage qui le convainc de rejoindre le centre d’une activité artistique fourmillante : New York. Sur place, il commence rapidement à fréquenter le CBGB ou encore le Mudd Club, les spots brûlants du moment. Des soirées qui sont aussi l'occasion pour lui d'immortaliser certains des plus grands artistes de son époque comme Blondie, Talking Heads ou encore son contemporain Kenneth Anger.

Son travail se concentre toujours sur le corps humain, son sujet de prédilection, témoignant d'une fascination grandissante pour les mises en scène sado masochistes. Une femme en tenue de bondage dans un réfrigérateur, un homme portant un masque de cuir juché sur ses toilettes… Autant de situations à la fois absurdes et dérangeantes qui définissent son style, décrit comme anti-art. Là où Mapplethorpe rencontre rapidement le succès avec une esthétique léchée, DeSana aborde les mêmes thèmes sulfureux par le biais du second degré et de l'ironie. Ces images en noir et blanc de la première heure sont rassemblés en 1979 dans l’ouvrage Submission, incluant un essai signé par l’auteur culte de la Beat Generation William S.Burroughs. C’est le seul recueil de son travail jamais publié, juste avant le début des années 80. À ce moment précis, l’œuvre de DeSana prend un tournant radical ; du monochrome, il passe au Cibachrome, un procédé de tirage par destruction de pigments. Utilisant une technique consistant à recouvrir des lampes à incandescence de gel coloré, il donne à son travail une nouvelle dimension, où la couleur devient un sujet d’étude en soi.

Lorsqu’il apprend qu’il est atteint du sida en 1983, le photographe se réfugie d’autant plus dans l’expérimentation photographique. Alors qu’il subit diverses opérations et fréquente régulièrement les hôpitaux, les corps sont de moins en moins présents sur ses photos, remplacés par des objets inertes tombés dans l’abstraction. Son besoin d’expression s’étend également à de nouvelles techniques telles que le collage et l’autoportrait et dévoile un nouveau versant de son œuvre. C’est à cette facette presque intimiste, révélée peu avant qu’il ne décède à l’âge de 40 ans, que s’est intéressée la Steven Kasher Gallery de New York. Avec Jimmy DeSana, Late Work, la galerie rend un dernier hommage à ce talent déchu à travers 30 tirages révélés pour la première fois au public. L'occasion rêvée de découvrir, parmi cet ensemble très représentatif des années 80, quelques images parfaitement intemporelles.
