Better still, his creations for <strong>Dior<\/strong> and for his own label now resell at outrageous prices. They are worn by celebrities on red carpets and at major cultural events. The free-spirited British designer left his mark on<strong> 1990s&nbsp;and 2000s fashion<\/strong>. At the time, he briefly was creative director at <strong>Givenchy<\/strong> in 1995, then at <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/fashion-week-en\/dior-fall-winter-2026-2027-show-paris-spring-stroll-water-lilies\/\"><strong>Dior<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between 1996 and 2011, <strong>John Galliano<\/strong> reshaped <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/fashion-week-en\/jonathan-andersons-haute-couture-blossoms-at-dior\/\"><strong>Dior<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s aesthetic. While remaining faithful to its codes and heritage, he also got rid of convention, staging theatrical runway shows fed by his eclectic imagination. He drew as much from his cosmopolitan childhood in Battersea, on the outskirts of London, as from his experience designing costumes for theatre. Success came almost immediately for him. <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/5-iconic-fashion-pieces-sold-at-auction\/\"><strong>Princess Diana<\/strong><\/a> wore one of his very first Dior dresses, while actresses and socialites alike embraced his designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a scandal soon tarnished his brilliant career\u2026 Accused of racism and antisemitism, the designer was dismissed from his position in March 2011. Then, he gradually withdrew from the fashion world. He made a discreet return three years later as creative director of <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/fashion-week-en\/what-makes-the-maison-margiela-artisanal-show-spectacular-2\/\"><strong>Maison Margiela<\/strong><\/a>, before leaving his position in 2024. Although he had given a handful of interviews \u2014 speaking at times about his addictions and time in rehab \u2014 <strong>John Galliano has remained discreet and silent<\/strong> for over a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5IoxGEt9fpg\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5IoxGEt9fpg<\/a>\r\nZara&#8217;s 50th anniversary campaign.<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Ludovic de Saint Sernin to Steven Meisel: Zara\u2019s new strategy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The surprise that comes from his appointment within the <strong>Zara ready-to-wear group<\/strong> is therefore complete. While Galliano\u2019s name has largely lingered as a reminder of Dior\u2019s golden age \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/who-is-jonathan-anderson-dior-mens-new-creative-director\/\"><strong>Jonathan Anderson<\/strong><\/a> has alluded to that era in his recent collections \u2014 his influence, or rather shadow, depending on one\u2019s point of view, now takes on a more tangible form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides, <strong>Zara<\/strong> is quite accustomed to this strategy. After several collaborations with <strong>Stefano Pilati<\/strong> and <strong>Ludovic de Saint Sernin<\/strong>, the Spanish brand designed the stage costume worn by singer <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/bad-bunny-porto-rico-javier-bardem\/\"><strong>Bad Bunny<\/strong><\/a> for his <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/super-bowl-2026-bad-bunny-to-perform-a-highly-political-halftime-show\/\"><strong>Super Bowl 2026 halftime show<\/strong><\/a> last January. This growing influence in the fashion world is further reinforced by campaigns featuring models, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/kate-moss-and-chloe-sevigny-the-sultry-muses-of-saint-laurents-new-campaign\/\"><strong>Kate Moss<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/art-design\/ellen-von-unwerth-tells-the-story-of-5-photographs-featuring-naomi-campbell-kate-moss-and-claudia-schiffer-2\/\"><strong>Naomi Campbell<\/strong><\/a>, and <strong>Kaia Gerber<\/strong>, often captured by renowned photographers, like <strong>Steven Meisel<\/strong>. It is a well-honed strategy that allows Zara to move upmarket and, in doing so, attract a new clientele\u2014if not at the risk of alienating another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The news of John Galliano\u2019s arrival at the brand is thus part of this <strong>aesthetic and commercial repositioning<\/strong>. While he is, of course, not becoming the artistic director of Zara\u2019s collections, the British designer is nonetheless entering into a <strong>two-year \u201ccreative partnership.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the course of this very unexpected collaboration, he will draw on the Spanish brand\u2019s archives, whose designs themselves often take inspiration from the wardrobes of luxury houses, to create <strong>seasonal capsule collections<\/strong>. The first one will be released in September 2026, to the delight the designer\u2019s devotees. However, it may also spark many negative reactions on social media, where fashion influencers and some journalists have been quick to remind everyone about the scandals that overshadowed Galliano in
