S\u00e9bastien Tellier’s bewitching creative and musical world<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As far back as he can remember, S\u00e9bastien Tellier<\/strong><\/a> always imagined becoming a toymaker. Not to produce plastic rubbish, obviously, but beautiful pieces full of charm, as was still the case in the 1980s. This was the dream he nursed in his council flat in a damp and distant suburb in the Val-d\u2019Oise. In photos taken at the time, he pulls a face and plays the sad child, a blackbird on his shoulder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, the mood brightened thanks to video games, skateboarding, and a BMX, which he learned to ride well without ever becoming brilliant. As adolescence set in, so did an unfailing rejection of authority, a tenacious mouse phobia, and a growing taste for music. S\u00e9bastien Tellier<\/strong><\/a> slowly transformed into a tall young man with a big bushy beard, a glamorous werewolf who sang like he was reciting fables while swirling a fine wine in his glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since his first studio album, L\u2019Incroyable V\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> (2001), his music has always spoken of love. Inspired by his assumptions \u2013 as though he felt authorized to talk about life without being an expert in anything \u2013 his flamboyant world mixes the rhymes of a Paul \u00c9luard<\/strong>, the weird chic of a Bertrand Mandico<\/strong>, and the sonorous tales of a Sergei Prokofiev<\/strong>. He draws his characters with dashes of colour, costume, and motif, from the tender ogre to the bashful braggart.

Twenty-two years after La<\/strong> Ritournelle<\/strong><\/em>, a cult track composed with the legendary drummer Tony Allen<\/strong>, he\u2019s back with one of his most accomplished albums yet. Halfway through our interview, he even removed his dark glasses, revealing beneath the signature mask a pair of eyes not mournful, but laughing. Interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
