Released in 2009, the science fiction feature directed by <strong>James Cameron<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"637\" data-end=\"646\">Titanic<\/em>, <em data-start=\"648\" data-end=\"660\">Terminator<\/em>, <em data-start=\"662\" data-end=\"670\">Aliens<\/em>) takes us to the year 2154, when a paraplegic ex-Marine is sent to the planet Pandora to infiltrate the <strong>Na\u2019vi<\/strong>, a native population living there. The <strong>Avatar<\/strong> program allows him to take on their appearance in order to gather intelligence about a valuable mineral\u2026<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"941\" data-end=\"1411\">Upon its release, the film shattered box office records, drawing nearly 284 million viewers and grossing close to 3 billion dollars. This technological gem also marked a cinematic revolution. <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/avatar-3-what-does-james-camerons-film-have-in-store\/\"><strong><em data-start=\"1134\" data-end=\"1142\">Avatar<\/em><\/strong><\/a> was the first major production to be widely shown in 3D and showcased the full potential of <strong>performance capture<\/strong> &#8211; a videographic technique used to record the movements of living beings or objects in space and translate them into computer-generated imagery or effects.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a8Gx8wiNbs8\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a8Gx8wiNbs8<\/a><br>The first teaser of <em>Avatar: The Way of Water<\/em> (2022).\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A remastered version at the heart of a misunderstanding<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"54\" data-end=\"782\">Fans of <em data-start=\"114\" data-end=\"122\">Avatar<\/em> had to wait thirteen years before discovering the sequel, <strong><em data-start=\"181\" data-end=\"207\">Avatar: The Way of Water<\/em><\/strong>, released in 2022. In the meantime, Disney announced the release of a remastered version\u2026 of the first opus. A familiar move for <strong>James<\/strong> <strong>Cameron,<\/strong> who had already released <em data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"399\">Titanic 3D<\/em> (2012), fifteen years after the original blockbuster. The goal? To create excitement around the saga and reinforce the idea that <em data-start=\"510\" data-end=\"518\">Avatar<\/em> is, and always will be, an experience designed for the big screen above all. Released in theaters in 2022, this 2.0 version was praised by critics, but also caused confusion among audiences\u2026 Some people no longer knew which film they were actually seeing.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"784\" data-end=\"1148\">\u201c<em>I called my mom to go see Avatar 2 at the cinema. Twitter just saved me from the scam of the century!<\/em>\u201d On social media, many viewers complained about the lack of clear information surrounding the screenings of <em data-start=\"1004\" data-end=\"1012\">Avatar<\/em>. Indeed, they had mistaken the remastered version released in September for the sequel, which wasn\u2019t scheduled for release until December.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1150\" data-end=\"1527\">In the darkness of the cinema, staring at the screen, they realized their mistake way too late. \u201c<em>I went to the movies to see Avatar 2, and\u00a0it took me thirty minutes to realise it was the first one!\u201d <\/em>one person complained on Twitter. \u201c<em>During my IMAX 3D screening of Avatar, I saw people storm out of the theater, furious. They thought it was <\/em>Avatar 2<em> and were asking for refunds<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ma1x7ikpid8\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Ma1x7ikpid8<\/a>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The trailer of the film <em>Avatar: Fire And Ash<\/em> (2025).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A saga tackling universal themes<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"59\" data-end=\"710\">How can we explain the phenomenal success of the saga? At a press conference for the promotion of <strong><em data-start=\"196\" data-end=\"221\">Avatar: Fire and Ash<\/em><\/strong> (2025), held at the H\u00f4tel Bristol in Paris in December 2025, which <em data-start=\"291\" data-end=\"299\">Num\u00e9ro<\/em> attended, <strong>James Cameron<\/strong> explained: \u201c<em>When I\u2019m writing and imagining the story, I want to deal with things that are universal to the human experience. Family, identity, purpose, duty to your family, to the community. Where do I belong to? And once I\u2019ve decided where I belong, how do I earn the respect of others? These are fundamental problems that people feel all around the world<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"712\" data-end=\"1029\">The Canadian-New Zealander director, 71, then added: \u201cWith the new<em> film, we\u2019re dealing with a refugee family, essentially displaced immigrants. With the <\/em><strong>Avatar<\/strong><em> films, we&#8217;re always trying to deal with very human and relatable themes, because it grounds this experience that takes place in this other fantastic world, and puts it in ways that are relatable.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><h2 style=\"text-align: center;\" data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1095\"><em data-start=\"1031\" data-end=\"1093\">&#8220;It\u2019s a film about grief, loss, and trauma.&#8221; &#8211; James Cameron<\/em><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1097\" data-end=\"1524\">Among the main themes is, of course, the environment. But not only. \u201c<em>It\u2019s a film about grief (Jake Sully and Neytiri\u2019s family mourn the death of Neteyam, ed.), loss, trauma. And it\u2019s a film about how we heal, move forward, carry our burden, and keep walking, breaking the cycle of violence born of the hatred that stems from that loss. That\u2019s what we see happening in the world today<\/em>,\u201d <strong>James Cameron <\/strong>explains.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1738\">At that same press conference, actor <strong>Sam Worthington<\/strong>, who plays one of the film\u2019s protagonists, added that this is \u201c<em>a franchise like no other<\/em>,\u201d a \u201c<em>unique blockbuster, very deep, very emotional, filled with important themes<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6rrSeNLcsTE\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6rrSeNLcsTE<\/a><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Miley Cyrus &#8211;<em> Avatar: Fire and Ash | Dream As One<\/em> (2025).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><h2>Miley Cyrus wrote a song for <em data-start=\"88\" data-end=\"113\">Avatar: Fire And Ash<\/em><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"57\" data-end=\"458\">In addition to the return of <strong>Sigourney Weaver<\/strong> (Kiri Sully), <strong>Zoe Saldana<\/strong> (Neytiri), and <strong>Sam Worthington<\/strong> (Jake Sully), one of the exciting surprises about the third installment is the epic song composed by singer Miley Cyrus for the soundtrack of <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/avatar-3-what-does-james-camerons-film-have-in-store\/\"><strong><em data-start=\"189\" data-end=\"214\">Avatar: Fire And Ash<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Unveiled in November 2025, it is titled <em data-start=\"403\" data-end=\"417\">Dream as One<\/em>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"882\">\u201c<em>Having been personally affected by fire and being rebuilt from the ashes, this project holds profound meaning for me<\/em>,\u201d the star posted on her Instagram account. She was referring to the wildfire that destroyed her Malibu home in 2018. \u201c<em>Thank you, Jim, for the opportunity to turn that experience into musical medicine. To watch this version, whose theatrical cut is expected to be around three hours, viewers might have to turn to the platform <strong>Disney+<\/strong>, which could release it as a miniseries.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1591\">In fact, it was a theory promoted by influential American film journalist <strong>Jeff Sneider<\/strong> on his X account (formerly Twitter) in March 2023: \u201c<em>RUMOR: Remember that 9-hour cut of AVATAR 3 that I told you James Cameron was insisting on having finished VFX for? I hear it could hit Disney+ as a limited series AFTER the theatrical cut of the film\u2026<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1593\" data-end=\"1846\">In the meantime, a series titled <strong><em data-start=\"1626\" data-end=\"1654\">Avatar: The Last Airbender<\/em><\/strong> was released on Netflix in 2024. However, it had nothing to do with James Cameron.
