Courtesy of the artist and Sans titre, Paris. \u00a9 Mattia Mognetti.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wei Libo, an artist who embraces craft with poetry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last June, the thousands of visitors at the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/art-design\/art-en\/art-basel-6-groundbreaking-works-spotted-at-the-fair\/\">Art Basel Fair<\/a><\/strong> were met with an impressive installation on their route. At the stand of the Parisian gallery <strong>Sans titre<\/strong>, a wall entirely covered in a large wooden panel unveiled a still life in shallow relief, made of curved lines and ovoid shapes. One could distinguish hazelnuts, peanuts, pears and plates, while the realism of the mangoes, watermelons and apples on curved shelves was striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An oval table was placed at the forefront, with seven sea-green, squash-shaped vases on it. The ceramics, pierced in places, revealed inlaid pieces of wood. Courtesy of the artist and Sans titre, Paris. \u00a9 Aure\u0301lien Mole.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A growing visibility, from the Paris Beaux-Arts to Art Basel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Primarily sculptural, <strong>Wei Libo<\/strong>\u2019s practice stems from a need to reclaim his family history. Born in the 1990s in north-west <strong>China<\/strong>, the artist witnessed the large-scale urbanisation of his country. That phenomenon led to the destruction of his family home. Leaving that house and the many objects it contained, has been haunting him since his arrival in France for his studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was at the <strong>Paris<\/strong> <strong>Beaux-Arts<\/strong> that he decided to entirely recreate a chest of drawers once crafted by his grandfather. To do so, he trained in marquetry for six months, determined to craft a faithful replica of the piece that has lived on in his memory for years. In early 2025, the results of his hard work were unveiled at the <strong>Frac \u00cele-de-France<\/strong>. View of the exhibition at the Galerie Sans titre, Paris, 2025. \u00a9 Aure\u0301lien Mole.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A passion for handwork<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fascinated by \u201c<em>the relationship between humans and earth<\/em>,\u201d <strong>Wei Libo<\/strong> is part of a new generation of artists reclaiming traditional craftsmanship, long dismissed by the contemporary art world. In addition to wood, the young artist has learned to master <strong>ceramics<\/strong>. He creates vases whose forms echo those of the Song dynasty with remarkable precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a child, he was deeply moved by an ancient Chinese ceramic. He used to think that a tiny creature was living in it. That memory would later inspire him to embed marquetry elements into his clay pieces \u2014 suggesting eyes or a fruit in decay \u2014 giving each object \u201c<em>the appearance of being inhabited<\/em>.\u201d Driven by his love for handwork, <strong>Wei Libo<\/strong> now hopes to explore yet another material, metal.
