That was Calabar, a city in southeastern Nigeria, where brick houses flaunt multicolored roofs. Back then, he hadn\u2019t yet picked his stage name, <strong>Obongjayar<\/strong>.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"769\">Based in London for the past fifteen years, the 32-year-old musician is an avid fan of singer <strong>Asa<\/strong> and Nigerian rap. He crafts deep, spiritual music, blending spoken word, original afrobeat, and electronic sounds. In his love songs, he reveals his light falsetto, as if speaking to a child.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"981\">Conversely, when tenderness gives way to uproar, his voice gets deeper, earthier, almost abrasive. A blend of poetic intensity and visceral commitment. In 2021, he released the track<strong> <em data-start=\"1245\" data-end=\"1261\">Point and Kill<\/em> <\/strong>with his friend <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/little-simz-unfiltered-interview-with-british-rap-phenomenon\/\"><strong>Little Simz<\/strong><\/a>. The music video is a tribute to neo-noir African cinema and draws its inspiration from <strong><em data-start=\"1373\" data-end=\"1386\">Touki Bouki <\/em><\/strong>(1973), <strong>Djibril Diop Mamb\u00e9ty<\/strong>\u2019s radical road movie.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1438\" data-end=\"1915\">Later, his collaboration with British producer <strong>Fred Again<\/strong> on <em data-start=\"1499\" data-end=\"1508\">Adore U<\/em> (2023) &#8211; now a platinum record &#8211; sealed his transformation into an alchemist of British groove and melancholy. Released at the end of May, his second album, <strong><em data-start=\"1662\" data-end=\"1676\">Paradise Now<\/em> <\/strong>(2025), stands as both a manifesto of freedom and a rejection of labels. How does it represent this new record?<\/strong><br data-start=\"858\" data-end=\"861\"><strong data-start=\"861\" data-end=\"875\">Obongjayar<\/strong>: I associate utopia with a destination. We&#8217;re constantly searching for a better &#8220;elsewhere&#8221;, because our current situation never seems good enough. But the ugliness we project onto our environment is just a mental construct, as if we had created the very obstacles we wish to overcome. On that cover, I\u2019m trying to break through a glass ceiling &#8211; the one I created myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong data-start=\"1254\" data-end=\"1414\">The press struggles to categorize your music, even though you clearly root it in the original afrobeat genre, far from its mainstream version. How do you explain that?<\/strong><br data-start=\"1414\" data-end=\"1417\">In my music, the influence of <strong>afrobeat<\/strong> is undeniable. In 2020, my track <em data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1511\">Carry Come, Carry Go<\/em> was heavily inspired by <em data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1542\">Lady<\/em> (1972) by <strong>Fela Kuti<\/strong>. Later, <em data-start=\"1571\" data-end=\"1584\">Tinko Tinko<\/em> (2022) leaned more towards <em data-start=\"1612\" data-end=\"1628\">Never Far Away<\/em> (2005) by Nigerian musician <strong>Lagbaja<\/strong>. The emotion I was expressing there was closer to <strong>Marvin Gaye<\/strong>\u2019s <em data-start=\"1729\" data-end=\"1760\">Ain\u2019t No Mountain High Enough<\/em> (1967). The image of a successful, accomplished artist, who no longer has any problem<\/em>.\u201d &#8211; Obongjayar<\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong data-start=\"222\" data-end=\"263\">Did that track allow you to play a character?<\/strong><br data-start=\"263\" data-end=\"266\">I embody a somewhat sultry, confident, almost toxic man. Don\u2019t expect me to fit into a mold. I\u2019m a tornado. I cannot be caged. I recently listened to <em data-start=\"437\" data-end=\"455\">Bonnie and Clyde<\/em> (1968) by <strong>Serge Gainsbourg<\/strong>, and I noticed similarities in the flow of the track and the use of background samples. It\u2019s fascinating! That energy seeped into how <em data-start=\"617\" data-end=\"631\">Sweet Danger<\/em> was composed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong data-start=\"648\" data-end=\"731\">If you could create a new, completely unprecedented ministry, what would it be?<\/strong><br data-start=\"731\" data-end=\"734\">A ministry whose sole mission would be to sabotage everything\u2026 before destroying itself. It would dismantle all institutions &#8211; governmental, religious, educational, economic &#8211; that have caused us so much harm. It combines science fiction, African history and speculative imagination to revalue Black identities. Your work is often associated with this movement. What do you think about that?<\/strong><br data-start=\"1375\" data-end=\"1378\">Lately, the term has been distorted, stripped of its real meaning. It\u2019s being used indiscriminately by people who don\u2019t truly understand it to describe anything that seems \u201cdifferent\u201d. And if it\u2019s just being used to qualify something as \u201cfuturistic,\u201d then I find it almost insulting. Why can the things we\u2019re doing exist here and now? Why must our work always be relegated to some distant future, to something alien or incomprehensible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1795\" data-end=\"2580\"><strong data-start=\"1795\" data-end=\"1931\">According to rapper <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/little-simz-unfiltered-interview-with-british-rap-phenomenon\/\">Little Simz<\/a>, people tend to assume that artists are always fulfilled because of their success. Are you full of doubt?<\/strong><br data-start=\"1931\" data-end=\"1934\"\/>Even those closest to us project that image onto us. An image of a successful, accomplished artist, who no longer has any problem. As if we were living on a plane above ordinary people. People picture us constantly creating, meditating on our ideas. That\u2019s not real. That being said, it\u2019s necessary to feel grief and loneliness. To go through these states and truly experience them. Feeling empty is already feeling something. Acknowledging absence is already a form of awareness. And that\u2019s often what we, as artists, try to explore through our music &#8211; this ability to debunk, understand and offer a new perspective on pain or emptiness.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
