The meteoric rise of singer Tems<\/h2>\n\n

In the mid-1990s, the city of Lagos<\/strong> pulsed to the rhythms of afrobeat, gospel, and international R\u2019n\u2019B. The Nigerian capital proved to be a fertile ground for the young singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi<\/strong> to make her debuts, dissecting the harmonies of Lauryn Hill<\/strong>\u2019s melodies. By the end of her teenage years, the artist had yet to adopt the stage name Tems<\/strong>, but she was already composing solo.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

It wasn\u2019t until 2020 and the release of her debut EP For Broken Ears<\/em> that the world truly discovered her sultry, warm voice. The track Essence<\/em> (2020), a duet with fellow artist Wizkid<\/strong>, became the first Nigerian song to break into the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. Tems<\/strong> had shattered a glass ceiling, and from there, things began to move quickly. Tems<\/strong>\u2019 music is built on a rare blend – a velvety voice with soulful inflections, raw, unfiltered songwriting, and minimal production. The artist is drawing her inspiration as much from experimental R\u2019n\u2019B<\/strong> as from the Yorubas’ spiritual images, a people from West Africa. Beneath the surface, one can hear the echo of b\u00e0t\u00e1 and d\u00f9nd\u00fan drums, the architects of ceremonial, winding rhythms from southwestern Nigeria, where music, dance, and ritual are one. This oral tradition, which runs from Lagos to Havana, flows into rumba, candombl\u00e9, afrobeat\u2026 And in Tems\u2019 work, it is translated into a pop mysticism with disarming modernity.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

In 2022, she contributed to the soundtrack of Black Panther<\/a>: Wakanda Forever<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0with a stunning cover of Bob Marley<\/strong>\u2019s No Woman, No Cry<\/em>. Her debut album Born in the Wild<\/em> (2024) followed, earning a wave of critical acclaim. Eighteen tracks filled with emotional tension, collaborations with J. Cole<\/strong> and Asake<\/strong>, and a message she sums up as \u201ca transformation from a cocoon to a butterfly<\/em>.\u201d The album was nominated in three categories at the Grammy Awards, \u201cBest Global Music Album,\u201d \u201cBest African Music Performance\u201d and \u201cBest R&B Song.\u201d Meanwhile, her track Love Me Jeje<\/em> (2024) reached over 5.8 million streams in just a few weeks.<\/p> \n \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/article><\/p>\n\n

A bold new EP titled Love Is a Kingdom<\/em><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n

Tems<\/strong> is now filling venues around the globe. From the Apollo Theatre in London to two sold-out nights at Paris\u2019s Olympia and major festivals like Glastonbury and Coachella, where she invited Wizkid<\/strong> and Justin Bieber<\/strong><\/a> to join her on stage. On November 21st, 2025, she released Love Is a Kingdom<\/em>, a seven-track EP she fully produced, wrote, and composed on her own. A radical move, instantly praised by critics. The EP navigates layers of consciousness, inner fractures, and a rekindled sense of faith.<\/p><\/p>\n\n
