A star actress in international cinema<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

She has already worked with Alice Winocour<\/strong>, Fatih Ak\u0131n<\/strong>, Guillaume Canet<\/strong>, C\u00e9dric Klapisch<\/strong>, Denys Arcand<\/strong>, Beno\u00eet Jacquot<\/strong>, and Fabienne Berthaud<\/strong>. Since November 14th, 2025, Diane Kruger<\/strong> has been captivating audiences in the brilliant historical series Merteuil<\/em><\/strong> on HBO Max. She embodies a\u00a0sultry heroine navigating the libertine underworld of Paris in an adaptation inspired by the novel Dangerous Liaisons<\/i><\/strong>. Interview with Diane Kruger<\/h2>\n\n\n

Num\u00e9ro<\/em>: What drew your attention in the series Merteuil<\/em>, which is loosely inspired by Dangerous Liaisons<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diane Kruger:<\/strong> I was drawn to the fact that the series is based on Dangerous Liaisons<\/em><\/strong>, a literary classic that has always fascinated me. I loved the idea of moving the story forward in time a little and exploring how Madame de Merteuil became the Marquise de Merteuil. Besides, I really enjoyed playing Madame de Rosemonde, one of the first women to choose freedom\u2026 Well, up to a point. Because women from that era weren\u2019t exactly free. I also loved the solidarity between these two women. I felt it offered a different take on this classic, one we hadn’t seen before. There were aspects to discover that felt genuinely new. Things you don\u2019t usually encounter in this kind of period piece, which often sticks to familiar codes. And I found a kind of modernity in it that was truly unique.<\/p>\n

How would you describe the relationship between your character, Madame de Rosemonde, and the libertine Isabelle de Merteuil?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I really like stories about women where the focus isn\u2019t just on rivalry. Both women are saying to each other: \u201cWe have to try to fight together against a system that wasn\u2019t made for us.<\/em>\u201d Rosemonde resisted the idea of being defined by men. She was one of the first to push back against the system and choose what was best for her. She didn’t get married. Of course, she had the means to do so, not every woman had the choice.<\/p>\n

Very early on, she fought against the class system. And she sees something of herself in the young Merteuil. At first, she thinks about using her, since youth is not on her side anymore and she lives in a system led by youth. These two women find each other and Merteuil ends up going further than Rosemonde ever did, or even dare to imagine. It’s also a generational story. And there’s something moving about it. Sadly, she\u2019s quickly faced with reality. Madame de Rosemonde can\u2019t go any further. I think there\u2019s something beautiful and tender in that.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I liked in <\/em>Merteuil was that women were the ones taking control of their own sexuality.<\/em>\u201d – Diane Kruger<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Costumes have an important place in the show. They highlight how much women were constrained at that time\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, exactly. They were trapped in costumes that looked like cages, adorned like paintings hung on a wall. But inside, there was precisely this desire to break free. I think you can really feel it in the series. These women [libertines, ed.] had a fire in their hearts and wanted to break the rules, in spite of all their adornments. They were striving for freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It appears to be quite a sultry show, featuring many sex scenes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strangely enough, I don\u2019t have that many intimate scenes. Aside from one with some Vikings, which is really my only sensual sequence. What I liked was that women were the ones taking control of their own sexuality. We are not naked just for the sake of it and the sex scenes aren\u2019t random. I found it quite exciting to show, especially in that time period [18th century], that women were taking the lead. These characters are in complete control of that sensuality. It feels very modern. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs a matter of fact, roles are much more interesting for women of a certain age<\/em>.\u201d – Diane Kruger<\/h3><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You recently appeared in <\/strong>Saint-Ex<\/strong><\/em>, starring Vincent Cassel<\/a> and Louis Garrel, as well as in David Cronenberg\u2019s <\/strong>The Shrouds.<\/strong><\/em> In addition to that, we will see you in a series about Marlene Dietrich by Fatih Alkin. This director also worked with you in Amrum, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025\u2026\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The series on Marlene is still a project under discussion. Cronenberg\u2019s film has already been shot but I haven\u2019t seen it yet. It is one of his most personal films, as it was inspired by his late wife. I play several characters in it, one is directly inspired by his wife, and Vincent plays a character inspired by David Cronenberg. It\u2019s really moving to be part of this adventure. As a huge Cronenberg fan, it\u2019s truly a dream come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did winning \u201cBest Actress\u201d at the Cannes Film Festival for\u00a0<\/strong>In the Fade<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(2017) change anything in your life?<\/strong><\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s hard to say. I think that the roles that came after\u00a0In the Fade<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>were also due to the fact that I was older. Roles are actually more interesting for women of a certain age [laughs]. But it\u2019s true that the film was a great showcase. I\u2019m sure that if I was to get a role anywhere,\u00a0In the Fade<\/em>\u00a0is one of the first features that directors would watch. Above all, that award personally changed a lot of things in my head. It brought me full circle, because the Cannes Film Festival<\/strong> has been with me throughout my career in the most incredible way. It was a very emotional moment when I received the award for \u201cBest Actress\u201d.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n
