Interview with Golshifteh Farahani, star of the film Les Clochettes de Kaboul<\/em><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n

\u201cFor the gods, my life is like Hunger Games \u2013 it never stops. I\u2019m a movie series with no limits<\/em>.\u201d We\u2019ve been together barely ten minutes when Golshifteh Farahani<\/strong><\/a> utters this rather extreme autobiographical statement, portraying herself as a woman addicted to intensity. And meeting the 42-year-old is indeed as exciting as her operatic reputation would suggest.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

On leaving her native Iran, in 2008, after a run-in with the authorities, she found refuge in France, where she has built one of those rare careers that are impossible to pigeonhole. As well as shooting Hollywood blockbusters \u2013 Ridley Scott<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Body of Lies<\/em> in 2008 and Exodus: Gods and Kings<\/em> in 2014; Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales<\/em> in 2017 \u2013 and rubbing shoulders with the Zen genius of Jim Jarmusch<\/strong> (Paterson, 2016), she has also dipped her toes into all the different streams of French cin\u00e9ma d\u2019auteur, from Marjane Satrapi<\/a>, Louis Garrel, and Christophe Honor\u00e9 to Alain Chabat, Eva Husson, and Arnaud Desplechin.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

She recently ate up the screen in Julia Ducournau<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s Alpha<\/em>, playing a mother trying to protect her daughter from a mysterious virus. \u201cFor me, Alpha<\/strong> is one of the best things I\u2019ve done, even if apparently some people didn\u2019t really get it. It\u2019s certainly not the easiest of movies.<\/em>\u201d During the shoot, Golshifteh Farahani<\/strong> hugely enjoyed working with the Titane<\/em><\/strong> director, whose strong personality is legendary. \u201cWith some directors, you can have a discussion, suggest ideas. But there\u2019s also something wonderful about abandoning yourself to a woman who knows exactly what she wants and will brook no deviations. With Julia it\u2019s biblical, it\u2019s written in the stones, it\u2019s destiny. She draws you into the world she seeks to create<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Golshifteh Farahani avoids facility like the plague, even if that means taking her share of knocks. \u201cSomething that would break another\u2019s back can happen to me three times in a row and I\u2019m still standing. I\u2019m resilient. I lose an arm, a leg, my soul is paraplegic, but I\u2019m a Paralympic champion<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Nothing seems able to stop the Cartier ambassador in her life of zigzags and upheavals, including the one she says she\u2019s going through right now.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

\u201cOn the scale of my life, I\u2019m just finishing middle school and am about to start high school. I\u2019ve been feeling the need for change for years. But it\u2019s hard to leave old habits behind. Hard to face losing your status as queen of the playground to become the littlest kid once again. The first book of my life is reaching an end, and it\u2019s time to start the next, which for the moment is a blank page. And that\u2019s frightening.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

\u201cUp till today, I was sometimes motived by duty and the idea of service. Now, I think I\u2019m really coming closer to the life I actually want.<\/em>\u201d – Golshifteh Farahani<\/h3><\/h3>\n\n

One new tactic to help the hyperactive actor get there is learning to say no. \u201cUp till today, I was sometimes motived by duty and the idea of service. Now, I think I\u2019m really coming closer to the life I actually want. I\u2019d already heard the voice calling, but it was like thunder in the distance. Now it\u2019s right there, overhead, and it\u2019s time for me to act. It\u2019s when you betray your own decisions that life turns against you<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Shooting films she finds indispensable, with directors capable of pushing her boundaries, but nonetheless not giving up everything for work \u2013 this is the new existence she dreams of. \u201cFor me, time has become much more precious<\/em>,\u201d she summarizes. If, for the moment, it\u2019s not a question of taking stock, Farahani nonetheless likes to highlight important stages in her trajectory.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

A brillant career in cinema<\/h2>\n\n

There was, for example, the meeting with Arnaud Desplechin<\/strong> on Fr\u00e8re et S\u0153ur<\/em> (2022). \u201cWith him it was crazy, I had the impression I was taking part in a workshop. The level of finesse in his way of directing was just beyond!<\/em>\u201d Golshifteh Farahani<\/strong> also remembers the stage version of Anna Karenina, directed by Ga\u00ebtan Vassar in 2016, which marked a turning point for her. \u201cThat\u2019s when my hair started going grey. Each night, during the monologue, it was as though I could feel it changing colour<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The actress, whose parents worked in Tehran\u2019s cultural scene, also crossed paths with the brilliant Abbas Kiarostami<\/strong> (Palme d\u2019or at Cannes in 1997 for Taste of Cherry), with whom she shot Shirin<\/em><\/strong> in 2008, a film that showed female faces in the half shadow of a movie theatre. The memory of the great man leads her to talk about the situation in Iran, where the “Woman, Life, Freedom”<\/em> movement has left her anything but indifferent.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had no <\/em>connection to Iranian cinema for a <\/em>very long time, but, after 18 years <\/em>of exile, all that interests me is <\/em>Iran. I find Iranian filmmakers very <\/em>intelligent, wonderful. What\u2019s <\/em>happening over there in terms of <\/em>culture is incredible. I\u2019d like to get <\/em>to know the new generation. <\/em>I hope one day, if the regime <\/em>changes, to run a festival, to give <\/em>that gift to Iran\u2019s youth and to all <\/em>the Westerners who haven\u2019t been <\/em>able to get to know the country, to <\/em>create a fruitful exchange<\/em>.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

A sense of adventure guides Golshifteh Farahani<\/strong>, which led her recently to spend time in the Amazon. \u201cI went there to heal<\/em>,\u201d she sidesteps when asked about her trip. Ibiza is also an essential refuge for her. \u201cI can\u2019t think of anywhere in Europe where so many foreigners come together. Ibiza belongs to everyone<\/em>.\u201d Is that where she rehearses her roles, in a sort of enchanted bubble before hitting the sound stage? Her reply gives an inkling of her unusual working method.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

“Bringing beauty to the world is also bringing goodness,” – Golshifteh Farahani<\/h3>\n\n

Even her 13-year relationship with the prestigious French jeweller Cartier<\/strong><\/a> is not a simple question of image for Golshifteh Farahani<\/strong>. \u201cFirstly, I have to say I love gold and diamonds. I\u2019m like a magpie attracted to everything that shines. Stones conserve a memory. So, with Cartier, it\u2019s not just a relationship with a brand \u2013 working with them is really A Thousand and One Nights. Every event they organize, each dinner, is very carefully thought through. For them and for me, bringing beauty to the world is also bringing goodness.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n

She will soon be back in Les<\/em> Clochettes de Kaboul<\/strong>, a film about resistance toward the Taliban. And after that? Who knows, for nothing is predictable with Golshifteh Farahani<\/strong> \u2013 which is no doubt what makes her so unforgettable.<\/p><\/p>\n\n
