Forget everything you believe in\u2026 That could be the tagline for Heretic<\/em><\/strong>, a horror film produced by A24<\/strong> and released in November 2024, available now on Canal+<\/strong>. The perfect pick a Halloween<\/strong> night. First, there is the charming Hugh Grant<\/strong> playing the darkest role of his career. At the opposite of his usual romcom<\/a> characters (Notting Hill<\/em>, Love Actually<\/em>, Bridget Jones\u2019s Diary<\/em><\/strong>, Four Weddings and a Funeral<\/em>), the actor embodies a lonesome psychopath, dressed in an improbable vintage plaid vest, who sets his sights on two young Mormon women.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

They soon find themselves caught in a trap that will shake and test their faith. Before watching Heretic<\/em>, it is best to forget the usual rules of horror films. Until now, the “final girl<\/a>” used to be the one who stayed a virgin. Here, the one who survives will be the clever one, smart enough to counter her host\u2019s twisted monologues on religion, life, and death with rock-solid arguments.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

Heretic<\/em><\/strong> unfolds as a suffocating psychological chamber piece, in which a disturbing theological debate takes place. Two young missionaries preach their faith, while their host challenges them, suggesting their God is worthless.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The film\u2019s talkative and erudite villain (played by Hugh Grant<\/strong>) goes so far as to compare religions to fast food chains, board games, and pop songs, even name-dropping Lana Del Rey<\/strong><\/a> and Radiohead<\/strong> along the way.<\/p> \n \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/div> \n<\/article><\/p>\n\n

An existentialist film led by Sophie Thatcher<\/h2>\n\n

In the second half of the film, the existentialist verbal sparring shifts into a tense cat-and-mouse game through a dark, labyrinthine house. At this point, we\u2019re plunged into a nerve-wracking survival movie that proves less compelling than the beginning of the film.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

While actress and scream queen<\/a> Sophie Thatcher<\/strong> (Yellowjackets<\/em>, The Boogeyman<\/em>, MaXXXine<\/em><\/strong><\/a>) makes quite an impression as a raw, resourceful young woman, the less charismatic Chloe East<\/strong> (The Fabelmans<\/em>) delivers a performance akin to a startled doe – a role we\u2019ve seen a thousand times before.<\/p><\/p>\n\n

The ending also feels rather flat compared to the chase and sharp dialogue that preceded it. But despite these shortcomings, Heretic<\/em><\/strong> stands out as one of this year\u2019s best horror films. The kind that could even convert moviegoers, who would normally steer clear of the horror genre, to the dark chapel of terror.<\/p><\/p>\n\n
