Crowned world number one from 1997 to 2000, Mark Kerr was known for his ferociously violent fights, earning him the nickname \u201c<strong>The Smashing Machine<\/strong>.\u201d For years, he remained undefeated, until his luck ran out\u2026<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"441\" data-end=\"900\">This intimate film focuses more on the athlete\u2019s inner demons than on his brutal exploits in the ring. <strong>Benny Safdie<\/strong> does explore his career as a professional fighter during the early days of <strong>MMA<\/strong>. But is also places a greater emphasis on his battle with painkiller addiction, his friendship with fellow fighter Mark Coleman, and his complicated relationship with his wife (brilliantly portrayed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/cillian-murphy-and-emily-blunt-are-in-mortal-danger-in-a-quiet-place-2-2\/\">Emily Blunt<\/a><\/strong>). Aside from its VHS-style aesthetic, the greatest asset of this raw, almost documentary film is <strong>The Rock<\/strong>\u2019s astonishing performance.<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1310\" data-end=\"1657\">His subtle and intense portrayal resonates all the more because the character\u2019s strength, fragility, and humanity echo<strong> Dwayne Johnson<\/strong>\u2019s own experience as a former wrestler. The actor told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/story\/smashing-machine-dwayne-johnson-benny-safdie-emily-blunt-exclusive?srsltid=AfmBOoo77Qfb0hDIslfi0Zc3bilRUDIQ20wJl8AmGR1RXhGOssm-TTAX\"><em data-start=\"1503\" data-end=\"1516\">Vanity Fair<\/em><\/a> that it was the most sensitive and demanding role of his career. <strong>Christopher Nolan<\/strong> even called his heart-wrenching performance \u201cincredible.\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1659\" data-end=\"1903\">Even if <strong><em>The<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em data-start=\"1671\" data-end=\"1689\">Smashing Machine <\/em><\/strong>isn\u2019t quite the knockout it promised to be, it may nonetheless earn <strong>Dwayne Johnson<\/strong> the first Oscar of his career.
