Released on October 17th, this second opus trims the fat and revels in its own excesses. Pop flirts with country, embraces unabashed kitsch, and even dips into a near-punk sludge metal. The outcome is an album as dazzling as stained glass, suspended between the breath of triumphant rock and the decadence of a Versailles court.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1537\">But here, the grandiloquence is reined in. Less excess, more poise, without forgetting the band&#8217;s taste for drama. Ever elegant and slightly wild, the five amazons still orchestrate their own bacchanal &#8211; stylish, outrageous, yet impeccably composed. Some have a classical music background, others are self-taught. They spent a long time hanging around Brixton, London\u2019s bustling neighbourhood, before forming The Dinner Party. A name that evokes both <strong>Marco Ferreri<\/strong>\u2019s <em data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"495\">La Grande Bouffe<\/em> (1973) and the scandalous banquet in ancient Rome.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"546\" data-end=\"899\">There was just one problem\u2026 By July 2020, American saxophonist<strong> Kamasi Washington<\/strong> had already formed The Dinner Party, a \u201csupergroup\u201d that includes pianist <strong>Robert Glasper<\/strong> and composers <strong>9th Wonder<\/strong> and <strong>Terrace Martin<\/strong> &#8211; one of the architects behind <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/fashion\/kendrick-lamar-named-chanels-new-brand-ambassador\/\"><strong>Kendrick Lamar<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s masterpiece <em data-start=\"818\" data-end=\"839\">To Pimp A Butterfly<\/em>. The Dinner Party had to become The Last Dinner Party.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"901\" data-end=\"1302\">About eight months ago, the quintet burst onto the scene with the track <strong><em data-start=\"973\" data-end=\"990\">Nothing Matters<\/em><\/strong>. The tone was set. <strong>The Last Dinner Party<\/strong> was poised to become one of the most important bands of the next decade. Yet, they had originally chosen the song <em data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1163\">Burn Alive<\/em> as their business card. The band is said to be making waves across the English Channel, where it won the <em data-start=\"314\" data-end=\"334\">BBC Sound of 2024<\/em>, an award given each year by music critics and bog names in the industry to celebrate the most promising artists.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"454\" data-end=\"687\"><strong>The Last Dinner Party<\/strong> outshone contenders like <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/interview-with-olivia-dean-the-new-bewitching-voice-of-soul\/\"><strong>Olivia Dean<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Peggy Gou<\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/must-see-singers-in-2024-from-tyla-to-chappell-roan\/\"><strong>Tyla<\/strong><\/a>. They are following in the footsteps of<strong> PinkPantheress<\/strong>, <strong>Pa Salieu<\/strong>, <strong>Celeste<\/strong>, or, going a bit further back, <strong>50 Cent<\/strong> (2003), <strong>Keane<\/strong> (2004), <strong>Corinne Bailey Rae<\/strong> (2006), and <strong>Adele<\/strong> (2008).<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"689\" data-end=\"1231\">These girls are talented, exceptionally talented. They know exactly where they\u2019re going and cite <strong>Ken Russell<\/strong>&#8216;s and <strong>Gregg Araki<\/strong>&#8216;s films among their inspirations. Moreover, they\u2019re surrounded by the right people, such as one of <strong>Metallica<\/strong>\u2019s managers. As for the production of their first album, they could count on <strong>James Ellis Ford<\/strong>, a close collaborator of <strong>Gorillaz<\/strong> and <strong>Arctic Monkeys<\/strong>. One thing led to another and these young women, nostalgic for an era they never lived through, found themselves opening for <strong>Nick Cave<\/strong>, <strong>Florence + The Machine<\/strong>, and then the <strong>Rolling Stones<\/strong>\u2026<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was all it took for an unlikely controversy to swell on social media. The band was accused of being a \u201cnepo-baby\u201d ensemble created by a label. Some were only just discovering how the modern music industry works. Others were simply talking nonsense online.
