A track was coined \u201c<strong>D\u2019Angelo-esque<\/strong>,\u201d just as one might call a film \u201cLynchian.\u201d As a definitive figure of nu-soul, the artist embodied the genre\u2019s shadowy sensuality and spiritual fervour, both of which he helped define.<\/p><br\/><p data-start=\"815\" data-end=\"1289\">On October 15th, 2025, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture\/musique\/will-beyonce-turn-into-a-rock-star-on-her-next-album\/\">Beyonc\u00e9<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/who-has-brought-summer-walker-h-e-r-and-erykah-badu-together-on-his-new-album-2\/\">Erykah Badu<\/a><\/strong>, <strong>Mary J. Blige<\/strong>, and <strong>Jamie Foxx<\/strong> paid tribute to one of their peers. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Michael Eugene Archer, his real name, died of cancer on October 14th, 2025. \u201c<em>After a prolonged and courageous battle, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D\u2019Angelo Archer has been called home, departing this life today,<\/em>\u201d his family wrote in a simple, elegant statement to honour the singer. The American pianist, guitarist, composer, and producer was just 51 years old.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a09swTbaSYM&amp;list=RDa09swTbaSYM&amp;start_radio=1\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=a09swTbaSYM&amp;list=RDa09swTbaSYM&amp;start_radio=1<\/a><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">D&#8217;Angelo \u2013 <em>The Line<\/em> (2000).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A prominent figure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"59\" data-end=\"392\"><strong>D\u2019Angelo<\/strong> leaves behind a body of work that is brief, but essential. One inevitably thinks of <strong><em data-start=\"175\" data-end=\"183\">Voodoo<\/em><\/strong> (2000), a feverish album that composer <strong>Christophe Chassol<\/strong> once called \u201c<em>a masterpiece of vocal layering<\/em>,\u201d referring to the gospel-derived technique in which overlapping voices merge into a single sonic material.<\/p><br\/><p data-start=\"914\" data-end=\"1204\">Nu-soul, of which he was the pagan messiah, was born from this fertile hybridization: an alchemy of jazz, funk, hip-hop, and African spiritual memory. In the early 1990s, as classic soul was sometimes fading into the gloss of pop, artists like Maxwell, Omar, and Erykah Badu reimagined it in a more visceral, more organic form. A sensual, syncopated soul that breathed between the beats rather than hammering them. That looseness\u2014that laid-back groove\u2014became its hallmark: a beat after the beat, a breath in the space.<\/p><br\/>Singer Bilal once summed up this philosophy in <em data-start=\"961\" data-end=\"972\">L\u2019Express<\/em>: \u201cNu-soul is warm music, played with real instruments. A vintage violin instead of a synth\u2014it\u2019s just not the same.\u201d D\u2019Angelo brought to it a spiritual intensity, in the tradition of Curtis Mayfield, Donny Hathaway, and Marvin Gaye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SxVNOnPyvIU&amp;list=RDSxVNOnPyvIU&amp;start_radio=1\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SxVNOnPyvIU&amp;list=RDSxVNOnPyvIU&amp;start_radio=1<\/a><\/div>\r\n<figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">D&#8217;Angelo \u2013 <em>Untitled (How Does It Feel)<\/em> (2000)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The journey of a prodigy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"60\" data-end=\"414\">Raised in gospel, <strong>D\u2019Angelo<\/strong> grew up in a home where music was a language before it was a job. The young piano prodigy learned trance before theory, faith before form. From the very beginning, he stood out as a singular figure in 1990s R\u2019n\u2019B thanks to his sepulchral voice, smooth groove, and almost-mystical presence.<\/p><br\/><p data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"884\">His debut album, <strong><em data-start=\"433\" data-end=\"446\">Brown Sugar<\/em> <\/strong>(1995), upended the grammar of soul &#8211; a steamy, incandescent record, rooted in tradition but looking ahead. <strong><em data-start=\"568\" data-end=\"576\">Voodoo<\/em><\/strong> (2000) would complete that transformation, thanks in part to <strong>J Dilla<\/strong>, whose imperfect beats infused every bar. But his bare torso in the video for <em>Untitled (How Does It Feel)<\/em> covers up some discomfort. That of a man trapped in his own myth. \u201c<em>I wasn\u2019t feeling comfortable in that sex symbol role<\/em>,\u201d he would later admit.<\/p><br\/><p data-start=\"886\" data-end=\"1310\">After the storm of <em data-start=\"905\" data-end=\"913\">Voodoo<\/em>, silence. Fourteen years of inner exile before the epiphany of <em data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"992\">Black Messiah<\/em> (2014), an album blending prayer, rage, and insurrection. In the meantime, D\u2019Angelo honed his craft\u2026 Bass lines sculpted by <strong>Pino Palladino<\/strong>, the hybrid textures crafted by <strong>Charlie Hunter<\/strong>, the sweat of sound as raw material. D\u2019Angelo thus reminded us that beyond the cult, music was far more than just a career for him.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1312\" data-end=\"1362\"><em>Black
