Behind their makeup and hilarious posture, they are thought to be tragic figures. <strong>Jim Carrey<\/strong>, who will receive an <strong>Honorary C\u00e9sar<\/strong> on February 26th, 2026, first emerged in the 1990s, making crowds laugh with his outrageous antics and made-up faces in<strong> <em data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1039\">The Mask<\/em><\/strong> (1994). He went on to star in a series of pure entertainment films. Whether in <strong><em data-start=\"1119\" data-end=\"1147\">Ace Ventura: Pet Detective<\/em> <\/strong>(1994), <strong><em data-start=\"1156\" data-end=\"1188\">How the Grinch Stole Christmas<\/em><\/strong> (2000), or<strong> <em data-start=\"1200\" data-end=\"1217\">Dumb and Dumber<\/em><\/strong> (1994), his Tex Avery\u2013style gimmicks and elastic funny faces had the entire world laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one day, the international joker no longer felt like laughing. Instead, he unveiled a rather serious, moving, and profound face in the political satire <strong><em data-start=\"1452\" data-end=\"1469\">The Truman Show<\/em> <\/strong>(1998). Then, came the melancholic <strong><em data-start=\"1494\" data-end=\"1511\">Man on the Moon<\/em><\/strong> (1999), and the poetic, sublime <strong><em data-start=\"1547\" data-end=\"1586\">Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind<\/em> <\/strong>(2004), directed by <strong>Michel Gondry<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French filmmaker who gave him his finest role, alongside <strong>Kate Winslet<\/strong>, never forgot him and later cast him in the Showtime series <strong><em data-start=\"1759\" data-end=\"1768\">Kidding<\/em><\/strong> in 2018. Riding this new momentum, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture\/is-jim-carreys-comeback-for-real-2\/\"><strong>Jim Carrey<\/strong><\/a> then presented a documentary on the not-always-funny comedian <strong>Andy Kaufman<\/strong> at the Toronto Film Festival. At 64, the actor has revealed another side of his personality as a painter and illustrator, completely consumed by his colourful, striking artworks, as showcased in the short film <strong><em data-start=\"380\" data-end=\"408\">Jim Carrey: I Needed Color<\/em><\/strong>, directed by David L. Bushell and released online. Painting seems to have saved the actor after his wife&#8217;s suicide, <strong>Cathriona White<\/strong>, in 2015, for which he was tried for involuntary manslaughter in 2018. During his rare public appearances, the former comedian also slips into the role of surreal commentator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invited to a <strong>New York Fashion Week<\/strong> party in 2017, he told a baffled <em>E!News<\/em> reporter that the event was nothing more than a meaningless circus and that neither she nor he truly existed. <em data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"1206\">\u201cI wanted to find the most meaningless thing I could come to and join. Today, his mind is what he wants to show the world. His interviews sound like strange life lessons. Fascinated by the figure of Christ and a devoted practitioner of transcendental meditation, he told CNN: <em data-start=\"537\" data-end=\"653\">\u201cMy soul is not contained within the limits of my body, my body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview published by <em data-start=\"686\" data-end=\"696\">Le Monde<\/em>, he took his musings even further: <em data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"1113\">\u201cMany people have interpreted what I went through as depression, but it has nothing to do with that. I began to take an interest in the idea of the Whole, rejecting more and more what is tied to individuality. My self gradually dissolved, through a series of little epiphanies.
