Before becoming the pop star we know today, the Californian had made her debut on Broadway at the age of 15. Back then, she already had one role in mind \u2014 the fairy Galinda, the emblematic character from the musical <strong><em data-start=\"992\" data-end=\"1000\">Wicked<\/em><\/strong>. A dream that has now come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><h2><em>Wicked<\/em>, a cult musical adapted on the silver screen<\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 80 years after <strong>Judy Garland<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/ariana-grande-why-is-2024-her-year\/\"><strong>Ariana Grande<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Cynthia Erivo<\/strong> bring the enchanted landscapes of <em data-start=\"1197\" data-end=\"1215\">The Wizard of Oz<\/em> back to life in <em data-start=\"1232\" data-end=\"1240\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/will-wicked-2-reignite-the-wickedcore-trend\/\">Wicked<\/a><\/strong><\/em>. Gregory Maguire\u2019s novel was first adapted into a stage musical by Stephen Schwartz in 2003, before hitting the big screen in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A kind of prequel to <em data-start=\"1396\" data-end=\"1414\">The Wizard of Oz<\/em>, it doesn&#8217;t follow the tale of the ruler of Oz, but that of two compelling characters. <strong>Cynthia Erivo<\/strong> plays Elphaba Thropp, a young and gifted sorceress ostracized for her green skin and her magical powers. While <strong>Ariana Grande<\/strong> embodies Glinda Upland, a witch adored by all, who comes from a wealthy family. When these two souls meet, they clash bitterly at first. The musical was a commercial success, ranking fifth at the global box office in 2024. But above all, it was largely acclaimed by the critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, the fairy tale <em data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"534\"><strong>Wicked<\/strong><\/em> stood as the perfect counterpoint to the biopics, dramas, and action blockbusters leading the race to the 2025 Oscars. Up against <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/timothee-chalamet-today-cynicism-is-stronger-than-in-the-sixties\/\"><strong>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong><\/a> as Bob Dylan in<strong> <em data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"733\">A Complete Unknown<\/em><\/strong>, <strong>Ralph Fiennes<\/strong> in the papal epic <em data-start=\"767\" data-end=\"777\"><strong>Conclave<\/strong><\/em>, and the frenzied antics of the quartet in <strong>Jacques Audiard<\/strong>\u2019s musical <em data-start=\"847\" data-end=\"861\"><strong>Emilia P\u00e9rez<\/strong><\/em>, <em data-start=\"863\" data-end=\"871\"><strong>Wicked<\/strong><\/em> did not go unnoticed. All Rights Reserved.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><h2>Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo to star in <em>Wicked: For Good<\/em><\/h2><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture\/ariana-grande-meryl-streep-and-nicole-kidman-in-a-musical-2\/\"><strong>Ariana Grande<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Cynthia Erivo<\/strong> were back in <em data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1247\"><strong>Wicked: For Good<\/strong><\/em>, the sequel to <em data-start=\"1187\" data-end=\"1195\"><strong>Wicked<\/strong><\/em>. And <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/colman-domingo-star-of-running-man-i-didnt-know-there-was-a-place-for-me-in-fashion\/\">Colman Domingo<\/a><\/strong> lent his voice to the fearful lion. While the stage musical was not divided into two acts, director <strong>Jon M. Chu<\/strong> felt compelled to split the story into two chapters in order to do it justice. On <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jonmchu\/status\/1518983750042136577\">X<\/a>, he explained that as he prepared <em data-start=\"1470\" data-end=\"1486\">Wicked<\/em> last year, \u201c<em>it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this new chapter, we once again follow the adventures of Elphaba and Glinda, who have become enemies. The former is a victim to a political conspiracy, incurring the wrath of the citizens of Oz. As for the latter, she becomes the regime&#8217;s puppet, forced to act against her friend. However, it failed to receive awards and nominations at the 2026 Academy Awards like the first opus. Hopes had been high that <strong>Cynthia Erivo<\/strong> might finally achieve the coveted <strong>EGOT<\/strong> \u2014 the rare distinction awarded to performers who have won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ariana Grande <\/strong>and <strong>Cynthia Erivo<\/strong> fared better at the Golden Globes, where <em>Wicked: For Good<\/em> earned five nominations. Cynthia Erivo received nods including Best Original Song for co-writing and performing one of the film\u2019s new tracks, while Ariana Grande was nominated for Best Actress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Wicked: For Good (2025), directed by Jon M.
