A flat, lengthy ceremony<\/h2>\n\n

The 98th Academy Awards<\/strong> took place on the night of March 15th\u201316th, 2026, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Conan O\u2019Brien<\/strong>, who had already hosted the ceremony in 2025, once again took the microphone. Known for his ironic tone, he notably joked about the criticism Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/strong> had made about ballet and opera. He also addressed the case of Jeffrey Epstein<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Overall, the ceremony was long, fairly flat, and not particularly exciting. It was barely political, which is somewhat surprising given the current events. Javier Bardem<\/strong> was one of the few figures to openly criticize Trump and Netanyahu for \u201canother illegal war.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n

However, there were some major innovations this year, such as a new award: Best Casting of the Year<\/strong>. As The Hollywood Reporter <\/em>reminds us, this is a first in the history of the Oscars<\/strong><\/a>. That decision, widely welcomed by industry professionals, finally acknowledges the central role casting directors play in the making of a film. The initiative could shift the perception of certain genres, especially comedies and independent films, often overlooked during award ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n

This year, the awards were handed out by Nicole Kidman<\/strong><\/a>, Pedro Pascal<\/strong>, Ewan McGregor<\/strong>, Mikey Madison<\/strong>, Adrien Brody<\/strong>, Zoe Saldana<\/strong>, Kieran Culkin, Wagner Moura, Sigourney Weaver, Channing Tatum<\/strong>, Rose Byrne<\/strong>, Lewis Pullman<\/strong> and Bill Pullman<\/strong>. All of them added a dose of glamour and humour to the evening.<\/p>\n\n

One Battle After Another <\/i>and\u00a0Sinners<\/em> won big<\/h2><\/h2>\n\n

Regarding the list of nominees, it included features like Marty Supreme<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (2025) by Josh Safdie<\/strong>, Hamnet<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (2025) by Chlo\u00e9 Zhao<\/strong> starring Paul Mescal<\/strong>, and One Battle After Another<\/strong> <\/em><\/a>(2025) by Paul Thomas Anderson<\/strong>. Sentimental Value<\/em><\/strong> and Frankenstein<\/em><\/strong> were also among the favorites. NOt to forget Ryan Coogler<\/strong>‘s phenomenal film Sinners<\/strong><\/em> (2025), which made a clean sweep with 16 nominations in total, thus becoming the most nominated film of all time.<\/p>\n\n

In the end, it was One Battle After Another<\/em><\/strong> by Paul Thomas Anderson<\/strong><\/a> that won big, racking up six Oscars – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor, Best Casting, and Best Editing. Sinners<\/em><\/strong> by Ryan Coogler<\/strong> received four awards, while Frankenstein<\/em><\/strong> received three and KPop Demon Hunters<\/em><\/strong> two. As for Marty Supreme<\/em><\/strong>, the feature didn’t receive any distinction. Was the overly aggressive marketing campaign to blame?<\/p>\n\n

As for the actors nominated at the 2026 Oscars<\/strong>, Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet<\/a><\/strong> was considered the favorite for Best Actor for his role as a table tennis champion in Marty Supreme<\/strong><\/em> (2025). However, his latest public comments about the state of opera and ballet worked against him. Michael B. Jordan\u00a0<\/strong>eventually stole the show with his dual performance in Sinners<\/em><\/strong>. In a heartfelt speech, he emphasized the black actors that came before him: Sidney Poitier<\/strong>,\u00a0Denzel Washington<\/strong>,\u00a0Halle Berry<\/strong>,\u00a0Jamie Foxx<\/strong>,\u00a0Forest Whitaker<\/strong> and Will Smith<\/strong>. The star is only the sixth black artist to receive the award for Best Actor in history.<\/p>\n\n

Jessie Buckley<\/strong> took home the award for Best Actress for her deeply inhabited performance as a grieving mother in the harrowing Hamnet<\/em><\/strong><\/a> (2025). It was the first time that an Irish actress won this prize. Clearly moved, she delivered an emotional speech as she accepted her award: \u201cThank you so much, this is really something. (\u2026) Thank you to the incredible women that I stand beside. I am inspired by your heart and your act, and I want to work with every single one of you.\u00a0 (\u2026) It’s is Mother\u2019s Day in the United Kingdom today. So I would like to dedicate this to the beautiful chaos of a mother\u2019s heart<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

And the award goes to Tom Cruise and Dolly Parton\u2026<\/h2>\n\n

American actor Tom Cruise<\/strong><\/a> received an Honorary Oscar Award<\/strong> for lifetime achievement at the Governors Awards on November 16th, 2025. “I was this little kid in this darkened theater. I remember that beam of light cut across the room. I looked up, and it seemed it just exploded on the screen. Suddenly, the world was so much larger than the one that I knew<\/em>.” Iconic singer Dolly Parton<\/strong><\/a> was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian prize for \u201coutstanding contribution to humanitarian causes<\/em>\u201d that same night.<\/p><\/p>\n\n
