The provocative <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/music\/ray-of-light-how-madonnas-cult-album-influences-pop-stars-today\/\">Madonna<\/a><\/strong>, 66, was supposed to direct a \u201c<em>visual autobiography<\/em>\u201d produced by Universal Pictures. Three years ago, she announced that she had started working on the screenplay for that project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with <em data-start=\"705\" data-end=\"714\">Variety<\/em>, the American singer declared that she was determined to direct it herself: \u201c<em>I\u2019ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film. It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. So I put my foot in the door and said, &#8216;No one\u2019s going to tell my story, but me.'&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the vehemence that characterises her, she added on social media in 2023: \u201c<em>Nobody knows what I know and what I have seen. Only I can tell my story. Anyone else who tries is a charlatan and a fool looking for instant gratification without doing the work<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A biopic retracing Madonna\u2019s life and career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except that in 2023, <em>Variety<\/em> revealed the project had been put on hold. The media described it as being on \u201can extended holiday.\u201d Indeed, as the singer was preparing <strong><em>The Celebration Tour <\/em><\/strong>from October 2023 to May 2024, she had little time to devote to anything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Multiple changes behind the scenes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Titled <strong><em data-start=\"1755\" data-end=\"1772\">Who\u2019s That Girl<\/em><\/strong> as a nod to the 1987 comedy in which the artist starred, the biopic has gone through many ups and downs. At first, <strong>Madonna<\/strong> was meant to be supported by screenwriter<strong>Erin Cressida Wilson<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"1948\" data-end=\"1953\">Fur<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"1962\">Chloe<\/em>, <em data-start=\"1964\" data-end=\"1975\">Secretary<\/em>). The very rock\u2019n\u2019roll <strong>Diablo Cody<\/strong>, who won an Oscar for <em data-start=\"2029\" data-end=\"2035\">Juno<\/em> (2007), had even helped draft the first version of the script. But it was ultimately abandoned, and it was unclear who was in charge of the film. Photo by Frank Trapper\/Corbis via Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Actress Julia Garner will play Madonna<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Singers <strong>Sky Ferreira<\/strong> and <strong>Bebe Rexha<\/strong> reportedly auditioned to embody <strong>Madonna<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/why-sydney-sweeney-star-of-echo-valley-is-one-of-hollywoods-most-promising-talents\/\"><strong>Sydney Sweeney<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>Barbie Ferreira<\/strong>, both known for their roles in the series <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/huge-salaries-departure-of-a-lead-role-what-does-euphoria-season-3-have-in-store-for-us-2\/\"><strong><em data-start=\"304\" data-end=\"314\">Euphoria<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, were also considered by the production team and the <em data-start=\"368\" data-end=\"383\">Material Girl <\/em>herself. According to several American media, the singer of <em data-start=\"436\" data-end=\"451\">Like a Virgin<\/em>&nbsp;even contemplated giving the lead role to British actress <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/thunderbolts-florence-pugh-tells-us-everything-about-marvels-new-indie-film\/\"><strong>Florence Pugh<\/strong><\/a> (<em data-start=\"532\" data-end=\"543\">Midsommar<\/em>, <em data-start=\"545\" data-end=\"558\">Black Widow<\/em>). In short, all of Hollywood seemed eager to land a part in this highly anticipated biopic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the end, <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/julia-garner-interview-ralph-ineson-stars-of-the-fantastic-four-first-steps\/\"><strong>Julia Garner<\/strong><\/a> (<em data-start=\"684\" data-end=\"700\">Inventing Anna<\/em>, <em data-start=\"702\" data-end=\"709\">Ozark<\/em>, <em data-start=\"711\" data-end=\"731\">The Fantastic Four<\/em>) and her uncanny resemblance to a young <strong>Madonna<\/strong>, won the race. She apparently received both the producers\u2019 and Madonna&#8217;s approval. Despite the multiple changes behind the scenes, the actress is still considered as the top choice to embody the pop star in this project. She has even been taking singing and dancing lessons to channel a convincing version of the star.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The singer also reportedly met with <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/sm-provocation-music-the-1001-lives-of-julia-fox\/\"><strong>Julia Fox<\/strong><\/a> to discuss the role of <strong>Debi <\/strong>Mazar \u2014 the actress and former best friend of Madonna. The casting choice fuelled even more buzz around the film, given that the <em data-start=\"1299\" data-end=\"1311\">Uncut Gems<\/em> star continues to draw attention with each of her appearances, especially during fashion shows. Photo by Getty Images. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The life of the pop icon told in a Netflix series<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While waiting for the feature film starring <strong>Julia Garner<\/strong> and, hopefully, <strong>Julia Fox<\/strong>, to come out, another biopic about Madonna is being developed by <strong>Netflix<\/strong>. For this new series project, <strong>Madonna<\/strong> is collaborating with director <strong>Shawn Levy.<\/strong> The latter directed the Marvel blockbuster <strong><em data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"1902\">Deadpool &amp; Wolverine<\/em><\/strong>, the second highest-grossing film worldwide in 2024. That same year, he was credited as an executive producer on the miniseries <em data-start=\"2036\" data-end=\"2054\"><strong>The Perfect Couple<\/strong><\/em> with <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/movies\/nicole-kidman-babygirl-erotic-thriller-new-projects-film-series\/\"><strong>Nicole Kidman<\/strong><\/a> too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One can already imagine that the biopic series will be packed with spectacular scenes, since <strong>Madonna<\/strong>\u2019s life has been peppered with multiple scandals. From shocking the Vatican and releasing a pornographic book to the lesbian kiss on prime-time television, she has never stopped defending the freedom of both her body and spirit throughout her career.
