Shot in Le Havre in 2024, the film was presented in competition at the <strong>2025 Cannes Film Festival<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A press release described it as \u201c<em>her most personal and profound work<\/em>.\u201d <em data-start=\"902\" data-end=\"909\">Alpha<\/em> explores themes of family, love, and monstrosity. During a press conference at the Cannes Film Festival on April 10th, 2025, <strong>Thierry Fr\u00e9maux<\/strong>, the festival\u2019s general delegate, explained: \u201c<em>Julia Ducournau isn&#8217;t resting on her laurels. She&#8217;s a filmmaker who visits<strong>\u00a0genre cinema<\/strong>, who takes it (like all genre filmmakers) to make her own personal cinema, a cinema of mise en sc\u00e8ne, formal inventions<\/em> <em>and actors. Golshifteh Farahani and Tahar Rahim, whom you&#8217;ll hardly recognize as he does a very striking composition role<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1456\" data-end=\"1547\">The official synopsis of <strong>Julia Ducournau<\/strong>\u2019s new film, set for release on August 20th, 2025, reads: \u201c<em>Alpha, 13, is a troubled teenager who lives alone with her mother. Born in Tehran, the French-Iranian actress has already worked with<strong> Jim Jarmusch<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"256\" data-end=\"266\">Paterson<\/em>), <strong>Arnaud<\/strong> <strong>Desplechin<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"288\" data-end=\"308\">Brother and Sister<\/em>), <strong>Mamad<\/strong> <strong>Haghighat<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"328\" data-end=\"340\">Two Angels<\/em>), and <strong>Ridley Scott<\/strong> (<em data-start=\"361\" data-end=\"375\">Body of Lies<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is joined by French actor <strong>Tahar Rahim<\/strong>, known for his performances in Jacques Audiard\u2019s <strong><em data-start=\"452\" data-end=\"463\">A Prophet<\/em> <\/strong>and the Netflix series <strong><em data-start=\"487\" data-end=\"500\">The Serpent<\/em><\/strong>. He also portrayed Paul Barras, former Director of the French Directory, in <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture-en\/maurizio-guccis-murder-lady-gaga-shares-the-first-image-from-the-set-of-ridley-scotts-new-film-2\/\"><strong>Ridley Scott<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s <strong><em data-start=\"595\" data-end=\"605\">Napoleon<\/em><\/strong> alongside <strong>Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong>, and played Armenian singer <strong>Charles Aznavour<\/strong> in <strong><em data-start=\"679\" data-end=\"698\">Monsieur Aznavour<\/em><\/strong>, directed by <strong>Grand Corps Malade<\/strong> and <strong>Mehdi Idir<\/strong>. Yet, it is already obvious that it won\u2019t please everyone. As a self-proclaimed devotee of <a href=\"https:\/\/numero.com\/en\/culture\/david-cronenberg-tells-us-everything-about-his-first-novel-consumed-2\/\"><strong>David Cronenberg<\/strong><\/a>, <strong>Julia Ducournau<\/strong>&#8216;s work has long divided audiences. In 2021, <em data-start=\"1225\" data-end=\"1233\">Titane<\/em> thrilled genre film enthusiasts, while leaving others unmoved. French media <em data-start=\"1299\" data-end=\"1306\">L\u2019Obs<\/em> praised \u201c<em>the affirmation of a filmmaker who rejects tepidity and believes, above all else, in the power of cinema.<\/em>\u201d <em data-start=\"1426\" data-end=\"1438\">Lib\u00e9ration <\/em>lamented that \u201c<em>Julia<\/em> <em>Ducournau\u2019s second film, as nightmarish as it is messy, mixes disgusting fantasies and disordered repulsions in the arbitrary swirl of a shaker.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><p data-start=\"1603\" data-end=\"1733\">During the promotion of David Cronenberg\u2019s <strong><em data-start=\"1646\" data-end=\"1668\">Crimes of the Future<\/em> <\/strong>(2022), actor <strong>Viggo Mortensen<\/strong> took the opportunity to comment: \u201c<em>Years ago, Cronenberg\u2019s <\/em>Crash<em> caused a scandal. In my opinion, no offense to the director of <\/em>Titane<em>, but <\/em>Crash<em> was head and shoulders above that movie, because it wasn\u2019t just about superficial shock value and unconventional imagery. There was a story beneath it, there was true character exploration in <\/em>Crash<em>, much more than in <\/em>Titane<em>, I think.<\/em>\u201d<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
